I am pg again and due in Dec and really want a VBAC this time.

I am considering moving to a CNM to have a hospital VBAC. Has anyone used the IHA group of CNMs our of St. Joe Ann Arbor? Can you tell me anything about your St. Joe VBAC?

My ob office is very VBAC friendly but I am leaning towards a midwife this time and we are not ready for a birth center or homebirth just yet.

Thanks!
I just had my dd there last year. Planned VBA2C, but ended up with a placenta previa, so repeat c/s. I LOVE St. Joe's, but I was just informed by my OB that there is a ban on VBAC's as of this year , unless you've had a previous vaginal birth, which I have not. I just had a talk with my OB about this this week, I'm not pregnant yet, but want to prepare for when we do want another. If you find anything different than what I've been told PLEASE let me know! I am holding out hope that this can't be for real. Just last year I had planned a VBAC there, no problem.

I have not heard about any VBAC bans. I am in St. Joe's pretty frequently as a doula. I actually have thought of the IHA practice of OBs that is in the same office as the midwives as one of the more VBAC-friendly OB practices in Washtenaw Co.

I have had a couple of not great experiences with that midwife group lately -- a lot of fear about postdates and big babies, mostly.

I have had better experiences, overall, with the UofM midwives, especially Kathy Bedikian, Joann Bailey, Jane Brigham, and Holly Powers.

Mary - I called my ob office this am and they said VBACs are the preferred choice in their office and St Joe defintely still does them. Might want to have your ob check again.

Defenestrator - We have to stay with St Joe so I think I will just give them a call. I am trying to choose between my ob and a cnm.

Thanks!

The first birth I attended was at St. Joe's, and they did an episiotomy, doc said it was routine. Just fyi -- this was a few years ago, so hopefully it's not standard anymore.

It isn't -- I have attended a lot of births with OBs and midwives both there and I have seen an episiotomy only once (with Dr. Davies from Menon, ******, and Davies in a situation where there was fetal distress). A second time one of the IHA midwives prepared to cut an episiotomy for a birth where the baby was in mild distress, but he was born before she could do it. Still, though, this is about 2 out of 30 or so.

A good place to get the skinny on docs and VBACs is the local ICAN list, FYI.

I gave birth almost four years ago (WOW! LOL) at St. Joe's and had no episiotomy. My OB was Dr. Menon, who encouraged me to stand during labor if I wanted to, sent the nurse to try to find the birthing ball (which she didn't find fyi), and the one nurse actually was encouraging me not to use pain meds when I started to waiver a little in my "no pain meds" stance - and I stayed pain med free. Okay, one intern did look at me like I had three heads when I said the IV was the worst part (I was actually induced so had to have one), and the recovery room was ridiculously small, but otherwise, no complaints. They were very open to what I did and did not want.

How do I find the local ICAN list? I have only heard of the organization and I visited the website but I can't find a list to subscribe to.

Thanks!

I could not recomend Holly Powers strongly enough, I absolutely love her, she was my midwife with DS. Also, Joyce Baker is who delivered my son, and she did a lot of things we really liked without ever even asking us, like letting the cord pulsate completely before cutting it...

Well, I did it! The first step in my VBAC, I have chosen a midwife. I was still really on the ob vs midwife fence. I called their office today and was promised a call back because the nurse was out. Little did I know/expect that it was the midwife that would be calling me back. She was so nice and so positive about VBAC. I call back tomorrow for my first appt. Now, I must just get this baby to cooperate and go head down!

Thanks for the encouragement!

Oh man, my net has been down a few days. St. Joes does them? What was he talking about then? He's usually very honest, that why I like him.

Congrats!! Was it Cheryl Bachman by chance? Cheryl was my midwife a little over 5 years ago when I delivered my son at St. Joe's. I delivered on my knees Cheryl helped to ensure a beautiful and natural birth...I have no personal experience with VBAC though...good luck!!

Holly Powers was one of my midwifes when I had my son three and half years ago, I returned to the UofM midwifes when I was pregnant this time around and ended up leaving their care. Holly was my main midwife up until I left. I didn't get a general feeling of positiveness (is that a word?: ) about VBACs from any of the midwifes there. I don't know what I was expecting from them, but I just know for the three appts I had I was told over and over about how I could not go past a certain date after my EDD, and the restrictions if I were to attempt a VBAC. It was like they were trying to drill them into my head. I'm sorry to be a negative nelly but I'm just telling my experience.
