: I hate crumbs stuck to my feet.
My children are wonderfully independent in the kitchen, but their clean-up skills are, let's say, still developing.

I'm thinking of investing in a simple hard floor vacuum. I tried to buy a regular vacuum that would do hard and carpet but it basically spreads the dirt around on our hard floor. So I'm ISO something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-161D6-S.../dp/B00005RI8N

I want something specifically for hard floors that will be light and easy for a younger kid to use. Anyone have one they really like?

A bonus would be if it could get bigger stuff like dropped apple peel, small chips, etc.

I just use my vacuum attachment. dd does great with it. It's bagless so I can easily check to see what has been sucked up.
I rarely mop, dd only drinks water so every spill just helps clean the floor.

We have this one and really like it. A bit pricey, but we had a gift certificate to Lowe's anyhow and it has been well worth it.

I really like this particular broom because it is cordless and very lightweight. My son is obsessed with vacuuming and has been using it by himself since he was about 16 months old! (The little booger purposely spills things like cereal, then looks at me with innocent eyes and says, "Uh-oh mommy. Vacuum, vacuum."

wabi, this is good to know - it was one of the two I was thinking about. The other was the dirt devil because it's supposed to be very powerful and pick up everything. But, it has a cord. I think cordless would rock -I could sweep with the baby in one arm, the big boys could help easily. Do you feel like it does a good job even with biggish crumbs?

Amy-

If you read any of the reviews for it on Amazon I think they're pretty accurate. It does a good job with spilled cereal, sand carried in from the sandbox, dog hair, etc. It is not, however, a substitute for a regular vacuum. We just keep ours out in the kitchen and it is easy to grab for little touch-ups without having to mess with hauling out the big sweeper. We still need to get out the big sweeper for totally thorough jobs, but at least with this we're able to go longer periods of time without using the real vacuum.

Besides that, it is my son's favorite "toy." He loves cleaning the floor and I don't think he'd be able to handle anything with a cord.

We bought this to use to sweep the kitchen floor and the litter around the cat box each day, and I LOVE it. It has the best features of a vacuum and a regular broom. I only have to clean out the canister about once a week.
