This is going to be a very tight Christmas for us this year, and I'm (now) starting to think of some toys I can easily make for my children. (7 yo ds, 3.5 yo dd)

One thing I was thinking of making were stilt-type toy, like I had when I was little. They were wood block-type with strings to hold onto. (I used to pretend I was an elephant.)

Any ideas what I could use that would be safe (e.g. not break too easily)? Also, what do you think of me putting together this as a kit for the kids? Dh suggested that I do this so it would be a family craft.

Ok, don't laugh - I was a big reader as a child! I remember in one of the "Ramona" books by Beverly Cleary that Ramona and Howie made stilts such as you're describing out of coffee cans.

I think a kit is a great idea. You can include a package of markers to share so that they can decorate whatever you use for the stilts. My kids love to do stuff like that!

Like this?

Looks like a jump rope weight rope should do it, just a block of wood with a hole drilled, easy peasy!

So pre-cut the rope and burn / bind the ends, pre-drill the holes, then just throw in a bag with stickers, markers, crayons, etc... Yes, I think it would make a great kit, good idea!!!

Yes! Just like that! I'll just need to source the materials.

Does anyone have any other ideas of what to make for a 7 yo boy? He's not too much into dolls, but not quite into the Rescue Heros scene yet either. He's extremely into trains and Pixar Cars and Legos.

Thanks!
