I am having an awful stink problem. I have already stripped them by boiling and washing over and over again with HOT water. But nothing seems to work, they still smell nasty.<br><br>
What else can I do? We are going out of towmn shortly and I do not want to be stuck in a hotel room with stinky diapers!

Have you tried doing a hot wash with just TTO and baking soda? That usually does the trick for us, TTO is great stuff.<br><br>
Once I was out of TTO and used a tiny, tiny amount of bleach. Not the best option, but it did work.

I know I'm not the only one that's done it before, and it does work well. I only used a small amount and made sure to do several extra rinses.

I do this only in emergencies, but yes <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/hide.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="hide"> I have done it too. Are they stinking when they are clean? Or just when they are dirty?

What kind of stink? We have had two different stink problems. I had dipes that smelled like ammonia (ok, an eye-watering reek) after pees. I have also had hemp inserts that smelled like poop after pees. They smelled like poop after poops too, but that is a different problem. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin"><br><br>
For the ammonia stink, alternating soaks in baking soda (1/2 cup per 3 gallon bucket) and vinegar (about 3 good glugs in same bucket) cured it easily as well as provided amusing visuals as the diapers blew up from the CO2 resulting from the reaction of vinegar and baking soda. However, vinegar will neutralize ammonia, which is why I think it worked. So you might not have to do the baking soda, but I did so that is why I am mentioning it.<br><br>
For the poopy smelling inserts, the only thing that worked was bleach. Or the three washes it took to get the bleach smell out. BS, TTO, oxyclean all did not work.<br><br>

My simple solution was 2 complete washes in cold with absolutely nothing added. Sounds bad, but this was the only thing that got the stink out of my inserts.

ya know i recently had this issue again and all my normal methods of getting rid of stink just were not working so I started to add some liquad fabric softner to my diapers wash load. not a whole bunch just a little and it has worked many a wonders! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/thumb.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="thumbs up">

I would say if you are just wanting to get it over with do the bleach. I only used 1/4 cup when I did it to my dipes, and it worked really well. But if you have a problem with your system the smell will come back eventually. Now we use 1/3 capful det. in a cold wash and a cap of calgon in a hot wash and we are good to go. Top loader here...<br>
