We just got word we were approved for a rental in the historic Jefferson Barracks area... it looks beautiful and we love the place... I was wondering if anyone else was in that area and/or if anyone could tell me about it?

I guess one concern I have is flooding since it's right on the Mississippi!

I don't know a whole lot about the area. We have some friends that live off of Telegraph Rd. It seems to be about in the middle. Not the best, not the worst. I asked them about the schools and they said they didn't have any problems. Their daughter is smart and nice. They said that she has done well in the district, but she's the type of kid to do well in any school. I don't know if you plan on using the public schools, but Lindbergh is a really good district.

There's also the Illinois side of the river. Columbia is the closest town to the JB bridge. I've heard they are a little snobby about who lives there, but that was second hand knowledge.

Where in that area is your rental going to be? I grew up in the neck of the woods. In general, flooding really isn't an issue as the St. Louis side of the river is at a higher elevation than the Illinois side.

Depending on where you will be will decide which school district you are in. Do you know which district you will be in?

It's right between Jefferson Barracks park and another park... Sherman Road (looks like the road ends right on the Mississppi... it is a historic building, used to be for the officers families.... I don't know about the school district...

The school district for that location should be either Hancock or Mehlville. I went to Hancock for grade school many years ago. Back when I was there, it wasn't a good school district at all, although it may have changed since I was there. The Mehlville school district is larger than Hancock, and better IMO.

You will be close to Columbia, IL which is just over the river from where you will be. I agree w/the pp that Columbia is a little snobby about who lives there, but we visit there frequently. You will also be close to 2 major highways and as the saying goes, it only takes 20 minutes to go from one side of town to the other.

There is lots of free entertainment in St. Louis, it's a relatively cheap place to raise a family. Be sure to take advantage of the programs in Jefferson Barracks park too, especially the adults only egg hunt around easter. It's a lot of fun!

you shouldnt have any issue with flooding in the jeff barracks area. we live right down the road from there on telegraph and we are really enjoying it. we are close to the things we want to do, its still easy to get to maplewood, kirkwood, webster groves (Where we do a lot of things) and people are very laid back and friendly. the school district is mehlville, which is pretty well rated, though lindbergh does have the highest ratings.

you will be close to some api playgroups and breastfeeding support meetings, cloth diaper stores, places to buy slings, etc. also some good farmers markets and produce stands, etc.

I'm definitely going to need help finding all the places to buy local - produce, farm eggs, milk, grassfed beef, etc...
