when my baby was young, i always cut up food into very small pieces. like, the size she couldn't possibly choke on.

also don't put too many pieces on her plate at once. otherwise they can stuff their mouths.

foods to avoid, grapes, apples, hot dogs, nuts obviously, i'm sure there's more.

also be sure to keep a close eye on your kiddo whenever they are eating. don't walk away or turn your back for more than a few seconds.

and be sure to know what you can do when they do choke on something. when they're little like under a year, you turn them over almost to dislodge a stuck food. (look it up to get a picture of the maneuver.) i did it at least once or twice, not sure if it was "entirely" necessary either time, but it stopped any question of whether she was choking (although it also made her cry). but it was reassuring to me to know that i could do it, and did get food out of her throat.

probably most important tip is to always watch them eat, so if there is a problem you can be right on top of it.

Thanks ElliesMomma...it helps to have a bunch of ideas.
Rowen choked on an ice cube (long story!) and it was the most terrifying 30 sec for her and for me, so I'm looking for sane ways to handle the worry of choking, aside from blending every bite that passes her lips for the next 5 years
