Hi!! I saw signs for that one yesterday when we were headed to Earth Fare. LMK how it is!

I love Vollmer. We are going this week and next week as well. One of our unschooling groups is doing a tour next week and a few of us in the API group are thinking of having a pick and picnic there shortly.

We love that they are organic. I have a good feeling about Ronnie being out in the fields for hours when I know he isn't being exposed to chemicals that disrupt the immune and reproductive system, and I am not really comfortable with some of the farms who are not organic and say trust me. They used to be a conventional tobacco farm and wanted to change to a family establishment promoting a healthy future. That is a big bonus for me to support them.

It was less than two years ago several got shut down for pesticide over use after women who were harvesting on them or who had spouses that worked on them had pregnancies with serious birth defects and infant deaths.

www.toxicfreenc.org has a lot of info on that and how if we as families support the farms who are organic, it will help nudge other farmers in the right direction.

Has anyone been to Jean's Berry Patch? It is so close to us, and both organic farms are over 45 minutes away...

I've emailed twice to ask about pesticide use, but haven't gotten an answer, guess I'll have to call. I'm thinking of taking my preschool on a field trip, but am concerned about having them out there among the poision!

ETA: I was driving home yesterday, and saw a sign for "Oakley's" (I think) PYO strawberries down one of the Farrington...roads--toward Gov. Club. Anyone heard of it?

Zoe,

Pickard's Mountain does field trips and they are organic and they do have strawberries, though they're a lot more than that. Not sure how close they are to you.

I don't think Jean's is organic.

I think I know where D&L is and if it's the one I'm thinking of a friend told me they don't spray their strawberries, but they do use non-organic-certified fertilizers. At least that's what they told him. He likes it. We pick at our CSA, so I'm not much help on that.

Thanks! We're taking a trip to Spence's Farm this week, so I didn't really want to make another long drive (30min +) for a field trip soon.

We visited Pickard Mnt during the farm tour, and it was pretty great. I already had the trip to Spence's set up, but otherwise would seriously have considered it, though it is a pretty far drive for us here in SW Durham.

I called Jean's today, and she told me they don't spray the berries...we'll probably end up there.

The one by Brier Creek is not organic and the berries were okay. I think I went a little early, they are probably sweeter now. I made some jam and it turned out wonderful. Lions Farm is also good. I wish they were organic, perhaps I'll make the drive to one of the other places listed here.

Thanks for this thread!
