DS's diapers have been stinky lately...like really strong pee/ammonia. DH and I thouht that his pee was just extra concentrated, maybe becuase he wasn't getting enough water. Anyways...today I decided to try and "Strip" ds's diapers. After the second wash cycle (1st with detergent 2nd with just water) there's still a lot of suds coming out which makes me think that was the problem.

So...my questions is how do I prevent that buildup in the first place? I usually use a little bit of laundry detergent and then sometimes also put in baking soda and vinegar. Thanks

I use vinegar in my wash and rinse(if you have hard water this is a good idea), vinegar helps nuetralize the ph in hard water(this was told to me by Mark from FUzbaby, when I emailed recently asking why vinegar works in hard water), with the hard water being more nuetral the soap/det rinses cleaner. It is the only way I have found(besides calgon) to keep my dipes from stinking.

DO you know if you have hard water?

I've tried doing multiple hot pre-rinses, using baking soda, vinegar, tea tree oil, lavender oil, BioKleen Bac-Out, and bleach. My dipes are still stinky. It's a very faint smell, but I smell it and it bothers me. If anyone has any other suggestions, I am game to it!!

Mamamoo, I was wondering how much vinegar do you use? I battled hard water and diaper stink for months before discovering Calgon, but I have had it with paying $6 for such a little bottle of that stuff.

To the OP, Calgon water softener helps, but as I said, it is $$$$.

The only way I don't have stink is with the following routine

Cold rinse
Hot wash w/ Sun
Hot wash w/ Bleach (1 tsp)
Cold rinse
Cold rinse with vinegar

I use about a half to one full cup of vinegar in the wash, and then do an extra hot rinse with the same amount. I get my vinegar at costco so it is pretty cheap and comes two gallons to a package. I have found it to be cheaper than calgon.
