Let's look at the "big picture":

If circumcision prevented transmission of the virus which causes AIDS, then AIDS would be virtually unknown in the US where circumcision has been commonplace for several generations.
Conversely, AIDS would be widespread in places like England, Finland, Germany, Italy, and other countries where circumcision is quite rare.

Yet this is not the case. Hmmm....

The study, which examined the association between male circumcision and HIV infection in 8 Sub-Saharan African countries, contradicts the findings of previous research and the opinion of several prominent personalities active in the fight against AIDS, such as former US President Bill Clinton.

While several studies have indicated that male circumcision has a protective effect against sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV infection, the evidence is inconclusive, said investigator Dr. Vinod Mishra, director of research, ORC Macro, Calverton, Maryland. "We're just questioning that push," he said of the optimism displayed by Clinton and others.

How embarrassing for Bill.

Welp, there go all his grandiose dreams of being an intregal player in wiping AIDS off the planet. Guess he should have used a little COMMON SENSE.

Do you know what I find really sad?

All this countless amount money spent to study if cutting genitals would prevent a disease. Think if all that money would have gone to education of safe sex, helping women to get better quolity of life, giving out condoms, starting classes in school about HIV prevention ... how many lives would have been saved?

In Africa people try anything to avoid HIV, all kinds of myths go around, I even read an article how virgins are raped to get protection against HIV. What do you think happens now when rumours go around that circumcision prevents HIV? Who will count the death toll?

OK, I have to get really cynical now:

Wouldn't it be convenient if lots of people in Africa simply "dissapeared"? Hey, that would give us a leg up in the fight against hunger. There are too many of them anyway.

Sorry, but that's what comes to mind when I wonder what on earth could be motivating this.

Thanks so much for posting the link, Phatchristy, I've been sending it out far and wide. If we all send it to other lists, forums, eventually it will get to the mainstream press and we'll have retraction stories coming out.

I thought retraction was to be avoided with intact babies and little boys.

yeah, I just can't believe this. I was listening to The World this evening on NPR and they were doing a story about this exact subject. The reporter said that men are just lining up for the procedure. i can just imagine they guys thinking that they now have carte blanche to do what ever they want. I mean for god's sake! this is really doing more harm than good... if circumcision was 100% effective in preventing transmission of AIDS that would be one thing but 60%? just echoing what some other pp have said but I just wanted to add my voice, too.

If we should be taking such measures to prevent possible disease or infection, perhaps we should have our brains removed too "in case" we might get brain cancer. Oh I guess it seems that some people have already had this procedure.....

The thing I don't like about these kinds of studies is that they don't look at the women at all. When you're conducting these circ. studies why not look at the partners of these men as well? Maybe it would turn out that circing increases the chances of someone transmitting the virus to their partner. Just a thought.

I like the condom sense idea...!

I too, as others, have read articles about how pro-circumcision advocates have negatively affected the perceptions/created misconceptions among groups of people.

I have read articles that these native people are calling male circumcision the "invisible condom." These concepts just DO NOT hold up to scrutiny. What sort of message are they trying to send. How about, using condoms EVERY time you have sex. And, maintaining monogomous relationships. The focus needs to be on proven protection against HIV infection.

Using condoms and other safe sex practices protects men AND women regardless of circumcision status.

My husband called me yesterday and told me to tune in to NPR for that same story. I thought it was Day to Day. Anyway, it really was the same ol' same ol' repeated claims of 60% decrease, etc. But near the end, something was mentioned that I'd never heard before. They said that in the area of Africa where HIV is most prevalent, men only have access to---on average---10 condoms PER YEAR.

WTH?

If that really, truly is the case...even if circumcision did decrease HIV risk by as much as 60% (yeah, right) they would STILL be screwed, because condoms are STILL essential to preventing the spread of the disease.
