I am trying to get into the mindset that I don't need stuff to make me happy. I have experienced that so many times with new cars, a new house, camera, clothes. Today I got Costco coupons in the mail. I am lusting after a composter and electric toothbrushes.

One of the things my mom always made me do was if I wanted something new I had to get rid of something of equal value/space. I didn't buy a lot of stuff for a long time...

We have the space, but the money can/will be used for bills and our vacation in July. Maybe I should make a goal of saving $X dollars for our vacation before buying anything else.

I don't think DH would let me buy anything. I told him we have money in the bank and he gets paid Friday. He likes that feeling.

Me too! If I can't see it, I can't buy it.

Beware of permanent retainers. Mine ended up turning my canine tooth facing front and center with the rest of them. It's now costing me $600 to fix with the invisalign.

I have a kaboodle.com list (a wishlist but you can add anything from any store) that family uses for birthdays / christmases (this is how my family is, if you don't have a list they pester you for one).

Anyway, when there is something I want, I put it on my kaboodle list, if I really want it, I can "ask" for it for my birthday or christmas, etc. Usually I throw things on there when I see or think of them and then when I get to a holiday I go in and really think about what I want and I generally end up not wanting them anymore anyway. The things that have stood the test of time, I have ended up getting as gifts, so it works out well.

I was going to suggest a list as well.

This week, I'm planning on spending a Target giftcard from Christmas.
I've had a running list since Christmas, playing with it, figuring out what I could buy/what I want. Over and over. I think half the fun is in the planning. It's April, and I think I know what I want to spend it on now. LOL

I keep a running list for lots of things. It helps to be able to go back in a day or a week and see what I want, then prioritize.

If there is something you really want or actually need, try seeing if you can get it for less than retail first. Can you make it? Can you wait until it goes on sale? Can you share one with a friend? Can you find it used? Can it be a requested gift?

Sometimes the additional effort involved in aquiring something this way gives me extra time to either 1) decide I didn't really need it in the first place or 2) at least slow the pace of consumption. There will always be something useful and nice to buy.

I have learned to deal with this problem by not letting myself make impulse purchases. If there is something I really want, I will sit on it for a while. If a month later, I still really want/need it, I'll get it. However, most of the time, I obsess about it for a wk and then it just leaves my mind and I realize that it was just lust, lol.

I had Invisalign and the retainers are supposed to stop my teeth from moving. If it doesn't work DH will be thrilled.
: Invisalign was not cheap.
