I am sure this is a stupid question, but here goes anyways.

I have a little boy and cleaning his diaper area is pretty straight forward. But I've never changed a girl baby, and we're having one in December. I suppose everything is pretty closed up when they are little? How do you make sure they are clean and no fecal matter is in their vagina area? Is it better to stick them in the sink and use the spray of water to gently clean them if they have a really messy poo or is it just easy to clean them with wipes?

I feel so dumb for even asking this.

Lol, don't feel dumb!
I just wipe front to back and make sure you get into all the fat folds that are down there. I suppose you could do the spray thing, but that would be a lot of extra work, imo.
Good luck!

Our babe's a boy, but we do spray him down with a peri bottle leftover from pp. Just thought I'd mention it in case you decide to go the spray route . It's super easy.

Oh, and congrats!

I just wipe from front to back, and make sure you get all up in the creases. Congratulations on the new baby.

And don't feel stupid for asking. I had all little boys in my family and then DS was my first. When I had DD I was like "Mom, help me! What do I do with this??!?!" Everyone thought it was hilarious that I didn't know how to clean her and was afraid to do it. It just freaked me out cleaning that little va JJ. That however, was short lived. Now I am a baby cleaning pro!

I'd have to agree here!! Boys are harder to clean!! Things "move" and it's harder to wipe it all off! :

That said, this is NOT a stupid question! Like the PP have said, just gently wipe front to back and make sure you get it all - you normally will with one to two wipes. I mean, if she is really poopy, sure, "hose" her down! LOL But for most cleanings, just wipes are good!

I dunno...

I had a girl THEN a boy and the boy seems easier to clean.

I might be thinking back on the ginormous poopies towards the end of her diapering though and how they seemed to get everywhere.

:

Boys don't have as many creases to get and we are not really worried about UTIs

Well, my DD has had poo up to her navel before, so the poo definitely does get in between the labia. So for those major poos, it's usually a 2 wipey affair. One wipe from front to back to get most everything. Then a clean wipe that I use to clean the poo from between her labia, which I gently separate with my fingers. I think you kind of have to do that in order to get it all, and I want to avoid forcing the poo further in, if you know what I mean.

I've never cleaned up a boy before so I can see myself asking the same question in reverse if we ever have one!

My guy was also confused about diaper changing etiquette for our daughter.

I wipe her with a wet wipe if she's relatively clean (i.e., mostly urine). If she's messier, I fill my peri bottle with an ounce of warm water and squirt her bottom, then wipe her clean. If she's really messy, then I use the bathroom sink.

Like the pp, I just wipe gently from front to back. If she's done a poo, I wipe it off, then I wash her with warm water over the sink, again from front to back. I call it the "bidet service." She really loves it, sticking her legs under the water and kicking them around.

having had 2 of each i find boys harder to get poop off.

with DD2 i jsut clean what is seen, i dont go poking around between her labia at all. unless i can SEE (as in she lifts ehr legs, her labia part naturaly and i can see some stuff, THEN i clean it) im thinking htat if any poop does get between teh foolds it will get flushed with next wee, jsut like if any poop gets under the forskin it gets flushed with next wee.

now if we have a all over the place from toes to hair(yes that has happened) then its bath time.

so woth DD2 its jsut wipe front to back, make sure its off thighs and butt and on with clean nappy. with DS2 its wipe front of penis, back of penis, scrotum, under scrotum, butt, and thighs and he is a wriggly monster who never stops moving so its way harder to change him.

Speaking of diaper changesd i think i need to go

That's the part I'm worried about. I don't see how you wipe them without pushing the poo in places it definitely doesn't belong!!

Thanks for all the advise everyone. It can't be as hard as I am making it out in my mind.

Not a stupid question at all. When they're first born everything is pretty swollen down there anyway, and it's not so tough to just kinda wipe things down. Once the labia start to shrink a little, more poopies get into the creases but it's relatively easy to wipe off and out gently. It stays pretty close to the surface from what I can tell. Just wipe front to back like all the PP's said. You'll do fine!
