I am planning to make the "baby's first tattoo" sweater for a friend. THe suggested yarn is Rowan 4-ply soft (100% wool). DF would like something washable and probably cooler (tho I do know that wool, being magical, can be both warm and cool when needed) since we're in Phoenix.

I was thinking of doing it in CottonEase if I can still snag some at JA this afternoon.

The gauge for the pattern (and the above Rowan yarn) is: 28 sts and 36 rows = 4 inches on size 3s.

The gauge for the CE is: 17 sts and 24 rows = 4" on size 8s.

This leads me to this question: assuming I can get gauge with the CE - should I use it? I've never seen the Rowan, so I can't compare it even in my head. Rowan does make a cotton blend yarn with the same gauge as the wool, so I can use that and am quite willing to. I'd probably have to order it (again, not a problem), but I was curious to know if the CE is even a choice. KWIM?

Consider it a larger gauge lesson for me. Or something.

i just bought four skeins of cotton ease to use for a dress for dd. Rowan is, as a local yarn shop instructor put it-"a world class yarn". I reallllly love rowan all seasons cotton, it is like butter. But my cotten ease at joanns is incredibly soft too. So, it really is a matter of what you want this peice to cost you. I also bought a fancy ribbon to put on the dress I'm making dd, so I figured that in. I say, as long as you like the feel, you can get gauge- go for it!Debbie Bliss also has some wonderfully soft baby yarns, such as the cashmerino.
I say, if you like the cotton ease , get it. Joanns is having the best sales lately!I don't usually buy yarn there but I snagged a bunch of cotton yarn to make fruits and veggies.

I rarely follow yarn suggestions, unless I want to try something new.You could go for a superwash.

What ev er you pick, make sure it isn't all cotton. Cotton stretches too easy by itself

It's best to get a blend.
