My 4 yo just spiked a sudden super high fever. She is sleeping right now, breathing fast etc. I thought she already had the flu a week or so ago. Do sudden high fevers usually mean a respitory thing or a tummy bug or what. I'm so worried when she wakes up, she's never been quite this high before, and she hallucinates when she gets high fevers. It's hard to wait these out. Any thought on what she and I are in for?

thanks!

I don't know what she's got, some virus I hope.

Don't try and get the fever down too quickly. It could lead to seizures.

I would make her a drink of diluted juice with SA and let her sip on it when she is awake every 15 min. or so.

If the fever is still that high, I would dunk some wash clothes in vinegar and wrap them around her feet. Put socks on top and do cover her but not with a lot of blankets. Let her just be comfortable but not to get the fever higher.

The fever should go down every hour or so and then go back up. That is the way the body controls it.

She is fighting some very bad bug that's for sure.

Doesn't mean she's got the flu. Could be anything.

She just got sick about an hour ago. Resting now. Seems it's viral as the fever seems to be going up and down. Dh is out getting pedialyte and some medicine droppers in case it's a tummy bug and they all get it and don't want to drink or eat.

There must be a bug going around because I had this on Wednesday. Woke up feeling fine, peaked a 104.7 degree fever Wednesday night. It broke early Thursday morning and I just felt tired/icky Thursday. Friday I lost my voice and it still hasn't come back all the way today, but is getting better each day. The fever hasn't come back <touch wood>. I feel fine now except for my voice.

Has she had roseola before? Sounds like that is how it starts.

Thanks Gitti, I have all of that. I'll do that.

and tttiggerrr, yeah, she was off and on warm last night (after the high fever) got sick a few times but nothing big (probably more from the high fever) and then woke up this morning saying "BETTER MOM!" I'm like, "ok, well i'm going into the nut house!!!". She is eating and drinking but I still have her planted on the couch. SEems like she feels fine. Boy that fever freaked me out. My dh got a forehead one and the first time I did it it read 105! I thought, add a degree so she's 106! holy crap. she seems almost prone to high fever illnesses.

And my 8mo just had roseola but neither she nor my 2 yo got it and neither have had it before. I thought that at first too.

guess i'll be looking for that voice thing to change...and for me to get it huh! yippee! love nursing and feeling like crap!
