My eagerly awaited sugarpeas side snappers arrived, but sadly I'm really disappointed with them. I opened the package reverantly and took out the gorgeous fluffy diapers and a beautiful celery wool cover with plum serging.

On closer examination, the serging on the cover is loopy, the tension is way off, its just a poor job. I've washed the diapers and they barely fit, they have shrunk by a good 30%. Do they even prewash that fabric? That's so bad - when I make diapers to sell I prewash the hemp five times, and dry it in the dryer in between because I couldnt bear to sell something to somebody and have it shrink on them.

I've washed them so I cant return them, and the shipping would add up to more than the diapers by the time I sent them back and exchanged them anyway. This is no reflection on the WAHM I bought them from, since I know she didnt make them. The diapers have come out of the wash, with thread unravelling from the serging, its all loopy too.

I'm really disappointed and not just a little bit angry.

Oh man! I just ordered 7 sp side snappers, 6 of them were the $9.71 irregulars from the outlet. I got the small/medium size since the mediums are really big and I figured the small/mediums would fit super trim on my little 15 month old. l'm so worried now that I made a big mistake! Although I only invested 60 dollars into those 6 irregulars, (well nearly 80 with shipping to Finland : ). Now i'm wondering if I should cancel the order? It hasn't shipped yet so entirely possible.... Or just get them and see and resell them if they don't work out? It's not like I'll lose TOO many dollars (hopefully) from reselling them since I only paid 9.71. Hmmmmm so confused.
What size and what material was yours?

I sell diapers too... I only prewash and dry my hemp once. I know that hemp shrinks quite a bit but I just assumed once would do the trick. I had no idea you should wash it more than once.
Thanks for the info, I will be sure to wash my hemp some more before I make anymopre dipes with it

I would think if the thread is unraveling they are defective and should be replaced/repaired. Sugar Pea's actually are known to have a problem with surging comming undone. There was a thread on this not to long ago. I bought four back in March before she stoped selling directly and had the same problem. I don't buy Sugar Pea's anymore.

If I were you I would contact the WHAM you bought them from and see if there is something that can be done.

I just bought 2 from the latest batch of print side snaps and they shrunk smaller than they should. The ones I bought from the batch before were fine. I was going to contact the place I bought them too, just haven't gotten around to it yet, I was hesitating because it wasn't her fault... I will email her today so others won't have to deal w/ the same problem...

I love the way the SS SP fit, I just wish they were more consistent...

Please let the wahm you bought from know. Hopeully she can do something for you, otherwise I would so straight to the top of SP manufacturing. That sounds like really poor manufacturing.

Good luck!

I ordered 2 seconds from sugarpeas and they shrunk a whole lot. They went from medium to newborn sized.:LOL I contacted sugarpeas and they took care of it. I was disappointed that I was then told they were seconds for sizing issues. Well it certainly didn't say that anywhere. Oh and the serging was horrible. I serged better the first day I got my serger. Anyhow contact them and they'll hopefully make it right.

I have six first quality ss ones, and they are holding up excellently. I have had no shrinkage, no wonky serging, just no problems. They are one of my favorites altogether. I have never quite understood the complaints about these, as i have never seen a problem. Oh, and they were bought from two different retailers online.

I only have one SS, it's a small and is getting to small for my dd 14lbish... and 3 months. but i don't think it shrunk all that much at all if any when i first got it. It was a second, and i have seen some front snaps with sernging problems but all mine seem to be holding up great (they are all bought off the TP except two seconds) and we use a stash of about 12... so i was every other day...

I have 5 SP SS and they are one of my favorites. No shrinking and no serging problems. Now that she has contracted sewers, I think it's really hard to keep an eye on quality control. Do contact her. If I were her I would want to know about problems so I could fix them.

I had a SP dipe that had horrible serging and returned it. Carrie was very nice and repaired it- there was a considerable delay and they sent me a free super doubler. I had a few side snap organic cotton SP that shrunk horribly (first quality) but I never followed up on it, just stuck them on the back of the shelf. I know I should have contacted SP, though, so I'm not going to complain about it- they can't fix what the don't know about

I love my SP side snap. I bought it when they first came out. Maybe I'll hold off for a while on buying more though. Did they add the snaps to keep the doubler in place now?

I have quite a few SP wool covers and don't have any problems with any of them. I did buy most of them probably over a year ago. But I just bought a new one from www.diaperware.com and it's just fine too.

I will say that the serging on the covers is looser than other covers. It's not a big issue to me since I hand wash my wool covers. I've actually washed some in the front loader on wool cycle and haven't had any problems too.

I only bought diapers from SP a very long time ago and I had an issue with the fact that they weren't preshrunk. It really does take a good 5 times of washing AND drying the hemp to get all the oils out and to preshrink. I know there are several diaper makers that don't fully preshrink their fabrics. I really wish they would though. It's disappointing to get a diaper that keeps shrinking for the first days.

As far as if you will like them or not though - it's such an individual thing! I remember thinking the diapers were AWESOME until I bought some other WAHM diapers. I do still really like the covers...they've held up really well for me and can go over just about anything. I find the covers tend to run large.

Actually now I reflect on it, this probably wasnt an appropriate post for here?

Anyhow, I think I will contact her because it irks me. Its just poor workmanship - it takes very little effort to set the tension properly on the serger, it takes even less to actually finish off the serging properly. Its really difficult when you're in another country, I ordered because we're desperate for diapers, the shipping cost me $US28 and sending them back and forth gets mighty expensive.

I think I've become a little more picky since I started making my own - but I make little all in ones and covers, fitteds are not my strong point. Not being a super sempstress but just enjoying making what I do thoroughly, I agonise over the little details. Whoever asked - I do prewash the hemp I use for my square soakers lots of times because it does continue to shrink for a few washes. I dont want any little details like that to trip me up. There's nothing more annoying than trying on a new diaper, loving the fit and going ahead and washing it only to find it no longer fits so well. This has happened to me more than once or twice. .

I bought these because they've been around a long time, I wanted something I could get in quantity that's not too expensive. It was also meant to be our last big purchase (Eliza's 20 months) and the site I bought them from stated that if in doubt as to size, to size down, Elizas 26 lb, the medium is supposed to fit to 30. Well maybe it will, but its going to look like a g-string on her, LOL (thong to you guys I think, thongs are what you wear on your feet in summer to me).

I think it's good you posted on here. I know that there are several diapers that people rave and rave about that I've gotten and been really disappointed with. I would imagine it to be all the more frustrating since you are in Australia! I get upset with all the shipping across the states!

Anyway...I remember reading lots and lots of positive reviews about certain different diapers and then later (after I bought them) found out that there were actually quite a few that were not happy with them. I think it's good to hear all sides of these things!

I would definitely contact the WAHM you purchased them from and/or the maker.

I think it's quite understandable that you are upset about the whole thing. It's really a bummer when we make a big order and then find it's not what we had hoped for or expected!

Hopefully either the WAHM or SP will do something to help you out!

sorry you have a problem mama That is dissapointing... especially when it takes so long and costs so much to get there.

Re: prewashing hemp .... I have heard a few hemp resellers say to just unroll it and it will shrink without washing... but that wasnt the case for me. I tried it and it didnt shrink until I washed it so I always prewash on HOT and dry on HOT 3 times.... thats the point where it stop shrinking for me. I think everyones number of wash and dry times probably varies depending on how hot the water is and how rough your washer is!

Sorry about your bummer fluff.

As for SP, I bought 2 front snapping seconds within the past month (6wks?) or so. I have had no trouble. So I'm guessing its not SP per se, but a quality control issue. As for shrinking, I dunno. I have knit outers w/ (ah heck, I don't know what the inners are ). Anyway, if they shrank some it wasn't appreciable to me. I've also had a couple SP wool covers that I definitely love. Anyway, sounds like you got a dud batch. ((hugs))
