We're going to be taking a week-long trip in mid-june. So far, the plan is to drive to spend the first weekend (and perhaps a few extra days) in Charleston, SC and end up in Asheville, NC for a wedding the next weekend. We're figuring that we'll spend 3-4 days in each place, depending on the weather. Does anyone have any suggestions about where we could go in between? It would probably just be a day or two mid-week, somewhere not TOO far out of the way. We'll have a 4 year old girl and a 1 year old boy with us. We're pretty low maintenance, but probably won't have camping stuff. Are there any hidden treasures we should check out? Anything silly and fun (and ideally cheap/free

)

We spent some time in Saluda NC last summer. It is on the way to Asheville off of I26. There are some nice waterfalls (Pearson's come to mind). The hike to the falls is easy and well maintained for little ones. We once stayed at a place called Cabin Fever (they have a one room rental with 2 beds that worked for us for a couple nights). Hope that you have a nice trip.

Frankly, there is not much really stop-over-worthy in between, IMO. Other than stopping for potty breaks, I don't really like much that is close to I-26 in SC. You could try Mapquesting an off-interstate drive and just meander through the small towns - that could be fun and much more scenic! Otherwise, I'd also suggest just waiting till you reach NC.

It's only four hours to Asheville from Chas. And I agree, there isn't much in between...unless you want to stop in Columbia for the Zoo and Children's Museum.

Tweetsie Railroad is really fun for kids!

Some campgrounds have camping cabins too. There's a nice campground in the middle of Charlotte, but I don't remember if they have the cabins.

Downtown Raleigh has some free museums, the science museum is great for kids.

Rutherfordton, NC has the Kidsenses museum. It's a nice little museum.
It's close to the border of NC/SC.
Hollywild in SC is kinda fun, to check out animals, but I would recommend the WNC nature center in Asheville; it's alot nicer.
Brevard is also a cute little town to check out south of Asheville; they have the Pisgah Nat.l Forest there and a Nature center.
Lake Lure and Chimney Rock in NC are also nice for families. You can swim at the lake or hike around chimney rock, and there are lots of little shops and such in the towns.
