Summer and flats

Okay, I'm not sure if it's because I'm really disliking my hemp right now or that it's almost summer (though we are in the middle of "June Gloom" :LOL), but I'm pulling out all my flats again and using them. I'm thinking I'm
'ing them! I definitely like the "kite" fold best ... at least right now ... I kind of modify it and have to fold/tuck the legs in when I'm all done. But I've managed to get my snappi to hold even flannel flats so I'm not pinning. But I think my ds (18 months) knows I'm putting flats on him and he's trying to make it difficult by pulling his legs up to his chest ...
- that's him! I know I'm definitely in one of those "nostalgic" moods of ... I should have stuck with prefolds and flats ... they are so versitile and so cute!
: Anyone else feeling the "almost-summer-love-the-flats" love?

Me Me....I'm loving the flats/prefolds right now.....it's all about simplicity right now....

Totally about simplicity! And they kind of remind me of our trips last summer ... I took pictures of the flats hanging on the ezi-up sun shade thingy ... our family thought we were weird (well, they already thought we were weird, this just added to it!), but we thought it was pretty cool!

dd is 8.5 months old, crawling, wiggly, and suddenly hates diaper changes. I used to have nothing but flats and prefolds, then bought a bunch of fitteds from the TP. Recently even snapping a fitted takes too long for dd--she fusses and cries, rolls over and tries to crawl away. And pins--forget it! So I just started folding flats into rectangles, fleece liner on top, placing in a polyester Nikky cover or Bumpy wool wrap. Then I grab dd, and unless she's poopy, pop everything on her as quickly as possible. I love how trim and soft the flats are, and they're really absorbent when folded that many times. Poop usually does get on the covers, but she only poops once most days, and sometimes only every other day, so no big deal. I'm actually considering selling off most of the fitteds and getting more flats and Nikky covers. I was so excited to have fitteds for the first time in our diapering career, but here I am ready to go back to something super-simple! I also love how fast flats dry.
I sold almost all of my fitteds and am now using flats and prefolds at home and on the weekends(pockets for the sitter during the week). SO simple...No worries about elastic red marks on my chunkers thighes either. And it does look so darn cute

There is something so sweet about the simple diapers. My life is super hectic crazy right now, and I swear it's soothing to see Kacie is her simple pinned diaper.

I am loving my flats these days! I just ordered another 6 German terry flats and 6 Australian terry flats that I haven't tried yet. The German ones are unbleached, soft, and stayed soft even when I dried them on the line. I can get a great fit kite folding on my 2yo with an infant prefold as padding. This holds him great overnight. Oragami fold fits as well, and is quite trim on him compared to my fitteds.

I have a doz. birdseye flats on the way, and am trying to get the hang of the 6 hand dyed ones I got from Sunflower Derrieres. They're listed as simply organic cotton, but I was pretty shocked that they're knit jersey...I wish I'd known that. I'd assumed that they'd be woven. I pinned one on the test-toddler, and they got little pinholes from the one time he wore them that just looked worse after washing it. The Snappi will have nothing to do with them, and I'm at a loss at how I'm meant to fasten them. And the lint...argh! The one I pinned & washed is a nice deep blue, and *covered* with lint from being washed with the other dipes. Any tips on how I can love these? I'm guessing that I can use them tied on the newborn, and maybe using with a BSIWW on the 2yo. But not feeling the organic jersey love right now. I'd gladly trade them for 6 terry flats.
The colors are very pretty though.

Those are the ones! They are labled 'Lenya', and if you google Lenya Windeln, you'll see them in all of their German glory.

Anyone know what brand Australian flats Wee-Bees carries? I would love some Canningvale ones, but it doesn't say.

Anyone have any thoughts on the jersey flats?

I really like flat diapers, was looking for a few more for our upcoming vacation and I thought, OC flats, great! Unfortunately, I had exactly the same experience with jersey flats (I assumed they were woven too)...immediate pinholes, so disappointing. I guess I'll just use them folded into a snug cover, but that's not what I bought them for. It seems odd that no one is offering plain woven OC flats (or at least unbleached cotton), but I haven't been able to find any. Maybe the terry ones don't get holes as easily, but I really like the nonbulkiness of woven flats and the super quick drying. I do the origami fold with two flats together, so there are quite a few layers in the soaker zone (would terry flats folded that way be really bulky?). I think there's a niche here...there must be OC birdseye fabric out there somewhere just waiting for a nice WAHM to make some flats!
We use 98% flats and pfs now and I really love it.

SimplyMama - how soft are the Australian flats after washing/drying? I am bummed that I can't see the German ones because they are out of stock now.

Well, I guess it's not just me having problems with jersey flats. I am finding it difficult to see what the benefits are to using that material for a flat. Other than being light & stretchy, I'm not finding the love. OK, they're soft. But my German terry flats are pretty light for a terry, and I can get a stretchy trim fit with them. I like the oragami fold best too, and don't find them bulky. However, I'm diapering a slim toddler. Maybe on a smaller babe it might seem a bit much...guess I'll find out soon!

I would love my jersey flats a lot more if they'd snappi, or take pins without getting those holes. I mean, I know OC is pricey, but I kind of feel that I'm not getting the kind of use out of them that I was hoping for. Maybe I'll tie them on the newborn, but I can't see these having the same versatility that I love about flats. I really wish the description had listed the type of cotton, 'cause never in a million years would I have guessed knit jersey for a flat.

I haven't gotten my Australian ones yet, so I'll have to get back to you on that. I imagine that they'll be a bit bulkier, but also a little thirstier than the German ones. Hopefully they'll be nice and soft line dried, but I'm guessing that they'll probably benefit from a little fluff in the dryer. I'm hoping that they won't get stiff over time, but I guess the occasional shot of Downey Advanced wouldn't hurt. I'll post after they've gotten a few washes.

I was suprised that the German ones are out of stock...I just ran over to check at Wee Bees, and sure enough, they're gone! Eeep! Hopefully I'll still get my order without any wait. When they *were* in stock, there was no picture. So if you'd like to see them, try playing around with "Lenya Windeln" on google...I'm sure there are some pictures on the web. Humph...I was all set to order another 1/2 doz. next month. :LOL

Oh man, I hope I ordered mine before she ran out of stock ... I ordered 2 of the German and 2 of the Australian from Wee Bees. Maybe I bought the last ones? I wonder how long before she gets more in?

Oh, and oc birdseye would be awesome for flats, but muy expensive (about $10/yard). So, I'm thinking unbleached (though not organic) birdseye would be better ... a little more economical, at least for my budget.

Wow, I wonder why it's more expensive than OC jersey? Seems like you'd be able to make OC birdseye flats for about the same $ as jersey, but I don't know anything about the fabric biz...maybe weaving is more expensive than knitting. But woven flats are so versatile and durable - they save a lot of money over sized fitted dipes, for sure, and utility bills are lower
so I'd splurge a little on OC (within reason).

Yea, I don't know why they'd be that much more (or rather, why the fabric would be that much more). Although I guess if one could find it from a whole-saler and buy in massive bulk, it might be cheaper. I've never looked into that (wouldn't really know where to find wholesale organic cotton ... though it'd be fun to buy massive quantities and just lay it all over the house! :LOL). I still want to buy some though!

I have another comparison question. How would indian flats compare to flannel receiving blankets in terms of thickness and absorbancy? I don't want to order a bunch and then be bummed. Thanks again!
i am finally ready to try flats again!

do you pinor snappi your flats? what type of cover do you use? or can you go coverless???

thanks mamas!!

I've been snappi'ing my flats ... both birdseye and flannel. I do have pins and will use them occassionally, but snappi's are just faster. Also, I've been having ds coverless about 1/2 the time, especially in the afternoon when we are more likely to be outside playing. The other day he was in a bright red/magenta colored flat, a t-shirt, and a pair of tennis shoes ... I meant to click a picture before he got muddy and stripped down by daddy.

I've also been really liking the kite fold - once I do the regular fold, I fold the sides in kind of like the newspaper fold for pf's to narrow down the crotch. Then I flare out the back wings and wrap them around. It gets the legs nice and tight and looks so dang cute!

I'm also hoping the indian flats are good as I've ordered a few dozen through a coop I'm part of. Hopefully at least one of the dozen will be here this week so I can let you all know how they are.
