The summer heat here is nearly unbearable! I have never been one to enjoy the dry-heat, but this summer so far is CRAZY HOT. We have a community pool I've visited a couple times...& guess what...IT'S HEATED! It was jacuzzi status when I went down there today, I could barely keep my feet in the water it was so hot!

Anyway-My question is: what are some ways you keep cool when preggo? We can't spend too much money on air-conditioning

The heat is awful - sorry you can't crank up the a/c... I am finding cool showers to be a huge help, and lots of ice in drinks. When I used to live without a/c I'd also put on damp T-shirts around the house.

Sucks that the pool is heated. I hate it when they are so warm you get hot in them... Some places turn off the pool heat when summer officially starts, so you might see if they are planning to turn it off soon.

I hear ya on the heated pool....and not being able to crank up the a/c....We are moving tomorrow and for the first time in almost 5 years we have to pay an electric bill and it's going to suck...been trying to wean off the free a/c but it's hard when it's so hot, so early this year....Our electric has been included in our rent until now....

I second the damp tshirt, ice drinks, cool showers.....

Our new place has a pool within the complex...I am hoping it's not heated but it's a fancy pool so it prolly is...I tried to talk Dh into going month to month until the baby came bc the pool at this complex is HUGE and it never gets warm...it's always nice and cold and normally I would hate that but this summer.....I'd prolly live in it...LMAO...Our community pool is heated.....

I'm in Georgia, and it's hot, but going to be much hotter. I crank up the air as needed. I'd have to change my lifestyle quite a bit if that wasn't an option.

I've been in extreme heat without air conditioning as an option. Small showers can be a huge relief. Having your hair wet will keep you cool. In Madras India, I used to have to get up two or three times a night, pour water over myself, and then get back into bed under the fan.

You can also keep a damp washcloth on the back of your neck, even with an ice cube roled up into it.

Slow down. Rest during the heat of the day. If you have heavy work to do, do it in the early cooler hours, or later at night. Pace yourself.

Hope that helps!

Jazzybaby, I'm in CO too, and today was particularly bad.

I like to fill a spray bottle with a combination of water and vodka (heavy on the water), and mist it over myself. It works really well in bringing your temperature down, but isn't great for skin. The evaporation dries everything out, so a good moisturizer is essential.

I grew up in central CA where the summers are blistering hot, so I totally understand. I spent my first pregnancy in the pool a whole bunch

Things that I remembering helping are the showers, wet hair and clothes mentioned. Cold drinks (dh has been making me his version of orange julius', they are great), wear sports bra and drop an ice cube down front, you'll have a wet spot, but it hits your core body temp and feels great. If you can't swim, put your feet in cold water, either the tub or just a regular container.

Good luck, I'm dreading this summer, I keep overheating too, and it isn't that bad yet, but I'm hoping for the rest of the summer to be easy.

Yeah today was disgusting. And of course, I found out today that our AC is broken
: . We go to the pool sometimes but lately it's been harder dealing with a non swimming toddler at the pool then just staying inside. We didn't leave the house today till 5 when it started to cool down. Most of the day we had our spray bottle out. DD loved it and it really helps. I would spray each of us and then we'd sit around the oscillating fan
. We also did a bunch of water play with cups on our deck.

So I'd say a spray bottle and a cool washcloth would be your best bet.

In Florida here, and the humidity makes it so that getting wet (on purpose, LOL) only has a very fleeting cooling effect. After that you just feel hot and wet.

I find (at night) what helps most is sleeping on crisp, cotton sheets and wearing lightweight pjs so my legs don't stick together. Also, I hurt my back a couple weeks ago, so for awhile I was living on an ice pack...took it to bed one night and just hugged it all night long--best sleep I've had! It's a nice big icepack that stays frozen for a LOOOONG time! (it's actually the icepack for my pyrex portables casserole dish, LOL!)

I'm particular about pillows, but I find myself rather intrigued by the chillow thing...if I knew it were comfortable, I'd totally get one! (google it if you don't know what I mean...I think they sell them at Target, too.)

Run cold water over your wrists as it's an instant cooler.

Also, you can get these things that go around the neck and keep you cool. Made of fabric and soaked in cold water, the beads keep the band cold for a while. Wish I knew what they were called officially.

I'm sorry, I feel your pain. It's so hot here, and humid-and I only have a/c in the living room and bedrooms. We don't use it much during the day, it's too expensive. To be honest, nothing helps. I just sweat, drink a lot of water, and try to stay off the furniture. It's a small comfort, but you're body will get more used to it as the summer goes on. I do love my cold showers in the evening when it starts to cool off, it's like my opportunity to stop sweating for the day! Other than that frozen juice pops are nice too!

Ah- other CO mamas. It has been HHOOOOTTTT! I went to the pool yesterday and today. It is fed by spring water and I was actually cold after swimming. There were 2 other pregnant ladies there today.

It's been hard for me to sleep. We just put in our AC last night and I think I'll have to use it more for sure.
