Anybody out there planning educational activities at home during the months off from school?

We're former homeschoolers now in school and love our summers. I would love to hear what families are doing at home when you cant afford camps!

We don't do any formal schooling at home and dd will go to a couple of camps (one is a science camp she was invited to and the other two are just for fun and all are less than a week each). The only thing I have pegged for her this summer is to try to get her to memorize the multiplication tables. She's in 2nd grade, going into 3rd and they are already doing more complicated multiplication (up to 3 digits) but they are not teaching the multiplication tables. I find them very useful in everyday life, so we're going to do that, if we find time when we're not playing.

Other than that, she likes to read and this summer she'll concentrate on reading in Spanish rather than English (she attends a one-way language immersion school) and also in the other language that is spoken at home if we can find some books for her in that language. She is reading a Harry Potter book in Spanish right now and that may take her a while yet. We'll try to get some books in the other language, too, on a trip back to dh's native country.

Mostly, though, we'll swim and play this summer as we do every summer.

We are going to work on memorizing math facts since my DS (finishing 2nd grade) tends to use his fingers to count a lot. We are also going to start on some multiplication. I like to keep him reading and doing some grade appropriate work since I know it is so easy to lose some of the skills over the summer. Nothing intense by an stretch. Mostly fun, hands on learning.

We're also former homeschoolers. This summer, I'm planning to work with my kids to memorize their basic math facts. They'll be doing a formal language arts/grammar book. And of course we'll be doing lots of reading, including reading aloud as a family before bed (which we do year round).

Are you including the "Putting My Feet Up and Sipping Iced Tea" Supplement? I've heard that there is significant debate about the role of sugar and lemon in the iced tea...

I always enrich my kids over the summer. There's plenty of camps, books, activities, concerts, museums and the shore.

We are doing the library reading program this summer as well as my own self-designed "Tour of Indiana State Parks" . Two summers ago we did the Tour of City Playgrounds and wrote "reviews" of every playground in the city. My kids loved it and we discovered some really cool places we hadn't been to yet. I hope this summer's state park plan will be a similar memorable experience. Also, my older two do a summer scrapbook with drawings, photos, brochures, etc. from the places we go. Plus lots of swimming and running around outside .

I love this! One of my goals is to take my kids to every MN State Park before they leave home. We camp and hike frequently, I think it's one of the best experiences I can give my children.

I will be doing some work from the Konos company (one of their Konos in a Box sets) minus the biblical studies.
