i feel a little ignorant for not knowing the answer, but how do you protect your young infant from the sun? i know that sunscreen is not recommended until 6 mos. my LO is 3 mos, and we are going to the zoo next week. he wears a hat, but what about his arms/legs? do people just use longsleeves/pants? he gets so sweaty. he will also be in the beco b/c we do not have a stroller. should i get a stroller just so he can be protected under a visor (will that protect his legs even)? i dont really want to use a stroller b/c its difficult to navigate at the busy exhibits at the zoo.

at that age, i covered my ds with a really light blanket over a onesie or just a diaper ... we also hung out in the shade alot <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

I'll be checking this thread. I'm so confused about sunscreen. My lo is 3 months too and I will keep her out of the sun and sunscreen free if possible however I don't know what to do about my 3 year old. I've just checked the ingredients of my 'natural' sunscreen and it's not so natural after all (octinoxate and oxybenzone) <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">. I guess I need to go shopping.

I used the carrier and draped a uv protective blanket over him. Underneath he had a onesie on.<br>
I got my blanket at sunsense.net. It's very light weight and has straps with velcro that work for attaching it to the carrier. It also worked well to strap each end to outdoor chairs to provide a covered area for babe on our deck.<br><br>

For my 4yr old for sunscreen we use NoZone sun shirts/shorts and Badgers sunscreen.<br><br>

both my children were born in Florida, it's always sunny and our pediatrician gave us Vanicream and also suggested MD Moms sunblock wipes. I used both on my children when they were infants. But only when we were in prolonged sun exposure. I frequently kept them in the shade whenever I could and the aforementioned hats, light blanket, etc.

I've heard that the "not before 6 months" recommendation isn't because the sunscreen can hurt baby, but because the AAP doesn't want kids out in the sun before 6 months, and thinks that banning sunscreen will keep moms from taking their kids out.<br><br>
We live in Florida and we can't avoid the sun, so we've taken to using the titanium dioxide sunscreen (specifically, from California Baby).
