I have a bed right next to the house that warms up very quickly, and I just noticed that I have volunteer sunflower seedlings from last year's plants. I've never tried this before, but I think I'm going to direct-sow them there this weekend (which is really, really early since I'm in zone 4), and cover if it gets really cold. It's worth a test to me though because it would be wonderful to have some earlier sunflowers!

I say if you have the time now, plant them. I let DD plant a whole bunch of them a few falls ago, and they came up great. Now I plant some in the late fall and some in the spring, and cannot tell the difference.
