for long car rides we generally use a pocket like a wonderoo or fuzzibunz and stuff with a regular cpf - the same set-up that we use at night. this avoids any leaks or wicking.
A beefy hemp fitted and probably a PUL cover if it's going to be a loooooooong drive. I can't seem to stuff enough hemp in pockets to last him very long.
If it's a long ride, and you aren't planning to stop often, I would go with a hemp fitted, with a doubler, and a pul cover (to avoid compression wetness)
You'll probably want to stop every 2-3 hours to feed him and stretch your legs, so any diaper should still work okay. Maybe an extra doubler just in case. I never did anything special for road trips with my kids when I had them in cloth.
Fuzzi Bunz are my workhorse diapers, for the times when it absolutely HAS to work well. She's in mediums, and I stuff her till her bottom looks like a balloon
with a premium prefold folded down in back (if I fold it down in front she can't sit right) AND a preemie prefold AND a homemade doubler or two if it's gonna be a LONG time. She gets through ten or eleven hours at night with this arrangement, so it will definitely hold up for a long car ride.
