Can anyone point me in the direction of research into the effects of giving formula as well as breastfeeding? I EBF and am planning to start pumping so that my DH can sometimes give DS a bottle of my milk if I want to go out (or more likely, so I can get some sleep). A friend said why don't I just give her formula on those occasions - I said because it disrupts the gut lining, removing some of the protective effects of breastfeeding, but she didn't believe that would be true if it was only occasional. I don't want to give DS formula anyway and it would be pointless if I can pump (which I can, and DS has already taken a small amount from a bottle so I know she'll do it), but is there any research that shows whether just occasional formula use has any negative effects? Thanks.
