I've been waiting for this phone call for a long time and now that I finally got the call I'm freaking out. I'm going in for a breast reduction. Been wanting one since I was in grade 11. Now that I'm done having more children and done nursing forever, I got put on the waiting list. I only know of one lady personally who has got one done, and hers was 25 years ago so things have changed. Does anyone have any advice for me in terms of the actual procedure, recovery, etc. I was told that I'd be off work for one week....but from what I've read that seems really short. I'm a nurses aide, so I do quite a bit of lifting, etc. I am also the only one in our house hold who works....so I can't be off for too long. Anyways, if anyone has any advice, that would be great.

Thanks.

i had my reduction 11-23-99. it was an amazing experience.
first, take AT LEAST a week off, two is better. and dont expect to lift anything weighing more than 15 lbs for at least a month, then slowly leading up to more weight. it took me a solid two weeks til i was able to fully raise my arms over my head without wanting to pass out in pain. sleep propped up, empty your drains as Dr orders, dont let them get too full. stay on top of your pain meds, its easier to manage pain when you arent chasing it. the first time you see your chest you will cry, and your heart will break in a million pieces. you will think they look square, and ugly, and like something out of a horror movie. the first 6 months are what i call "frankenbooby" stage, where they are hard, square, and just plain ugly. at a year, they should be softer, and a bit more round. mine didnt look like breasts for almost two years. dont buy a bra for after surgery YET, you really have NO idea what size you will be, AFTER surgery, go buy a heavy duty sports bra with massive ammounts of support. the pressure feels the best at first.
if you have ANY questions feel free to PM me, i am happy to answer any questions anyone has about having a breast reduction, even though mine was almost 10 years ago.

angela- I havn't had mine yet, working on getting our stupid insurance to cover it
but make sure you check into oflma or short term disability. They pay at 60% of your income atleast they did 4 yes ago when I was off for months with my first pregnancy for hyper-emisis (sp)

Good luck mama

Hmmm, how would that work. I'm in BC so we pay into MSP, but we have NO extended medical.

Hah! Someday I'll get mine.

Sure, it's scary, but I don't know a single person who has regretted a boob reduction. I know plenty who've regretted not doing it (and some who wish they'd had more taken out).

A family member of mine had hers done in the 80s. I doubt she has any visible scarring now, but she finds that when she gains weight, she gains there, too. However, unlike before, she *loses* boob weight if she loses body weight. Before, she was like me--any weight that went on the boobs stayed there, even if the rest of the body gets practically skeletal.

A close friend had one done a couple years ago. She looks fantastic and goes braless all the time now. So jealous. I know the recovery was painful in the ways mentioned above.

Good luck!
