what an annoying experience. I took ds2 to a "non-vax friendly" ped, and after congratulating me on having a big, healthy baby, we went around and around on the vax issue. I really didn't feel like getting into a debate, so I told her that I was researching and would vax later when I felt comfortable. I thought that would get her off my case but it didn't. Here are some highlights of our "discussion."

Me: I don't see the point in vaxing a newborn baby or young child for a sexually transmitted disease (Hep B.) What is the logic of vaxing a baby for an adult disease when the "immunity" will wear off in 5 or 10 years?

Her: Well, because it is recommended.

: The logic is that it is recommended??

Me: Aren't we shifting the epidemiological burden of some of these childhood illnesses on to the adult population? How is this beneficial, when these illnesses are much more serious in adults? Isn't it better to let children contract chickenpox, for example, to give them lifetime immunity?

Her: There is no such thing as lifetime immunity, even when you contract these illnesses naturally. Some people get chicken pox over and over. Anyway, someday all adults will get boosters.

Great! Vax 'em when they're young and then they just have to keep getting vaxed throughout their lives! Just what I want for my kids.

Me: I don't understand why my 12 lb baby would receive the same amount of vaccine as a 200 lb man.

Her: (blank stare)

Me: I'm more concerned about the risks of injecting my baby with vaccines that contain things like mercury, formaldehyde, and aluminum than I am about the diseases themselves.

Her: These diseases are very serious. 30% of people who contract measles will die. I'm very concerned that if you do not vaccinate your baby, he could die.

Me: Wow, with all the advancements in medicine, 30% of people who get measles will die? That's really hard to believe.

Her: I'd like to go ahead today and give him at least a couple of the "basic" shots.

Me: No. I haven't changed my mind. I still do not feel comfortable vaccinating him at this point.

Her: Ok. I will give you the waiver to sign. So, I'll see you back in a month to start him on his shots.

:

I have no intention of going back.

AHHHHHHHH! I can't really even reply becasue this kind of stuff makes me so mad. My dd is 5 mo and we just keep doing the "we're still researching, I'll let you know if I change my mind but I know I want to wait a little longer" Usually I just get a disapproving look or a comment but nothing like what you went through. Good for you for sticking your ground and responding. "Because it is reccommended" How many horrible things has the medical community reccommended that we have later found to be detrimental?

: don't you just want to ask "how many vaxes do you have in your storage closet/fridge that you are worried about not SELLING?? she definitley must have a few extras of those "BASIC" shots'. grrr.

good for you for knowing your stuff momma!

i want to understand more about the 12lb baby would get same vax as a 200lb man info. ive heard that before and completely believe it but i don't "get it". could an example be when mom, dad and 9 month old baby go to the flu clinic, they all get the same vax?? makes me sad to think of all the friends that got the flue vax for themselves and the baby too.

when im reading thru package inserts i don't really see how it explains the whole weight calibration... you have any good links?

Time to find a new doc!!!! We had much more success w/ a family practice doc vs. a ped. Our ped did not even know the flu vax contains thermerisol! : Sorry for your experience but good for you for not letting her bully you around!

Ugh.

I had a "consultation" with our current ped's practice before we signed on with them a few years ago (not that we're ever there), so that I wouldn't have to deal with that annoying BS. Vaccines are never mentioned - ever.

Although there was that young, new ped in the practice that we got one time who told me that I'd better stay away from the mall. After I got done laughing, then put on a serious face and said, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME - that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard?" he didn't say another word to me for the rest of the visit and he didn't look me in the eye either for the rest of the visit either.

If you stay, you'll need to nip in the bud and put her in check. Otherwise, find a new doc.

I actually lost my doc for refusing. Holy bullying. Here, it's hard to find a doc.

Anyway, I eventually found a new one who is way cool. She is so supportive, even though she does believe children should be vaxed routinely. I am so fine with her holding that opinion so long as she doesn't treat me like crap about it.

I'm so sorry about your experience, but unfortunately you're not alone!

Find a new dr. This one doesn't know her from a hole in the ground. 30% of people with measles die? WTF? Um, even the CDC admits that measles doesn't kill people in non-starvation areas....

Ugh. Ds will soon be 4 mo, and I am just dreading the visit! We were fired by one ped when he was born for not vaxing, and then I found this family practice. At a two week exploratory visit, they said that I could have flexibility with vaccination--I mentioned waiting until at least a year. Then, at the 2 mo appt, the pressure began I refused, of course, but I am dreading going back

I hear you!

Thats insane...

I'm so glad I don't get any guff from doctors. I just say "We do not vaccinate for religious reasons"

I usually get the *blink blink* processing the magic "R-word" and then they say "um...okay." and move on. I can hear their thought process "CRAP! She said the R-word! If I say anything I could be sued for discrimination. Crap crap crap."

Start over with the religion card. You cant trust someone who clearly lies for their own agenda.

LI, I would have liked to be a fly on the wall at that ped visit you described. . That young md had no idea who he was tring to push around with his outrageous scare tactics. I'm LMAO just picturing it

Yes, unfortunately. One that won't kick you out of their practice. I had the same experience with my 'un-vax friendly' recommended doctor. Each time I go I get the talk. I finally said that it was against my religion... that stopped it.
