We're looking to either spend a couple of days at Lake Michigan on August 21-22, or to spend a couple of days at an inland lake along I-69 (basically between Tecumseh and Indianapolis) We just want to go swimming a lot.

I've been looking online and there are about a billion choices, only expensive hotels advertised (like $200/night/room, I think *not*), and it's really just too confusing.

I want an inexpensive, <$100/night, clean hotel/motel room, within like 30 mins driving of a great place to swim. Is there anything like that in your area? Unfortunately, we don't have camping equipment so tenting's out.

Pokagon State Park in Angola, IN is a neat place and has two lakes. It also has a nice Inn.

I'm not quite sure if it's on your way, but I live in St. Joseph, MI, which is right on Lake Michigan and right off of I-94 (exit 28). There is a great beach here called Silver Beach, it's the best "family beach" around. The hotels around here are pretty reasonable, the motel right around the corner from my house is about $50 a night during the week. There's also a neat place for kid's to visit called "Curious Kids Museum" and a new Butterly House down by the beach. Hope this helps!

I second the St. Joseph area. My family has a beach cottage there and it is BEAUTIFUL! We usually rent ours in the summer and it is one of the few smaller less expensive ones, but my brother will be using it the time you are up there for his birthday.
Look online for cottage rentals in St. Joseph/ Coloma etc. And have a blast!
