Swaddling seems to help Lincoln fall asleep on some days, not all, but especially when we've had a long day of being out and about its a really good tool.

Problem is that he's 3months and 15lbs, and something like 23inches long. Our swaddle blankets are too small!! We have 2 that kinda work, but we have to hold it tight around him until he's out otherwise he wiggles out of it!

I was told by someone about the "Woombie" (www.thewoombie.com) is great - does anyone have experience with this? I looked at it and think it might be ok but would like to hear some AP parents take on it. I usually nurse Lincoln to sleep even when he is swaddled, so swaddling doesn't replace one of us helping him to fall asleep, it really just prevents the crazy reflexive arm movements that can prevent us from getting him to fall asleep (and scratch his face! those mittens are getting too small!)

Thanks!

Blakely is 7 months old (today!), 20 lbs (unsure of length) and she is still swaddled! We use some really soft fleece we picked up at Walmart. I can't remember how much...a couple of yards I guess..Maybe a yard and a half? We don't swaddle her legs, though, just her upper body. Hope you find something that works!

We swaddled our son until almost six months and he was a big boy. We liked the miracle blanket. He outgrew it in length and we just left his legs outside. We also had some luck with the kiddopatmus version with velcro.

We're having issues with this, as well. DD will keep herself awake scratching her face, flailing her arms and legs. We've always used the Kiddopotamus size small swaddle, but it's now just barely too small. We upgraded to a size large and it's just too huge; she can wiggle her arms out with no problem.

The Woombie looks interesting. I just purchased one, we'll see how it works out.

Let me know how it works out!! One reason I haven't ordered one yet is that I don't know what size to get!

I don't have a blanket recommendation, but wanted to let you know that we are still swaddling our 4 month old. I go back and forth on it. It really seems to help her fall asleep and stay asleep, but sometimes she really fights it and I feel bad about that. If I don't use it she just windmills those arms forever (during nursing and rocking) and has a really hard time falling asleep. I only swaddle her arms and if she fights out of it, I don't re-swaddle. Some nights, I don't swaddle at all. I do worry that if I continue to swaddle it might become hard for her to sleep without it - so I keep trying to let her sleep freely and be more patient. Not sure if my concerns are realistic though.

I swaddle my 8 month old still because she seems to like it for naps. We just have a small child's blanket/large baby blanket that we use, fold in a triangle shape. We also only swaddle her arms and leave her legs free.

You can also pick up a 1- 1.5 yards of fabric at the craft store and use that for a blanket. A knit fabric doesn't need a hem on it, you can use it just as it is from the store, though you'll want to prewash it first.

oh and we swaddled her when she was first born but stopped around 3 months because we thought she didn't like it... after months of terrible nap schedule depsite everything, we tried it again around 5-6 months and she started taking consistent 2 hour naps twice a day. wow, wish I hadn't stopped using it before. She'll cry when you wrap her up, but that just until she gets rolled over and comfy and then she's content. Now when she wakes up mid nap, she'll go right back to sleep after a moment or two, before she's be up with no getting her back to sleep.

We weaned at 3.5 months. He cried a lot getting swaddled and would fight it in his sleep. He'd be more woken up by the arm he had half stuck out. He could nap fine on my lap with out it so I knew he was ready. We weaned on accident. He pee leaked in the only swaddle (kiddopatumus Swaddle Me) that fit him. We had no choice but to put him in a sleep sack we recently purchased. He has only scratched himself twice, more due to my not keeping up with his nails. Trim them super short and no scatches!

I still swaddle my 6-month-old at night and just put a light blanket in the bottom of her crib, put her whole body except her head on top of it, and wrap her up, tucking the ends under her. I wrap her upper body very snugly, but just lay the blanket over her legs. I like this arrangement because it prevents her from flailing her arms, which used to wake her up a lot, but she can still break out of it pretty easily if she wants her arms free.
