I know this Q might have been asked before but I just want to make sure I'm being safe!!

I was listening to a news network yesterday and they were talking about the little girl Trinity Casey who was found drowned yesterday after a nationwide Amber alert was issues b/c she went missing and thought there might have been foul play.

They said she was wearing a sundress and a diaper and what probably happened was that she fell into the lake and the diaper absorbed tons of water and dragged her down and she never had a chance. She was wearing a reg diaper (sposie) not a swim diaper.

We've been using a wonderoos shell and a microfiber towel when DD (15 mo) goes swimming in our pool. Obviously we are right there on top of her the whole time so I don't think she would fall in but I hate to think the wonderoo might not be safe to swim in. Do I need to buy a few cloth swim diapers? Will they not obsorb water as much?

DH gave me the go ahead after hearding this story to buy a few so I'd love a few suggestions on what to buy if I need to buy something..And nothing hyena please..And I'd love something one size if they make it..

Thanks!

We've actually stopped using swim diapers altogether. Instead, I only buy the bathing suits that have a built-in "swim diaper" so they don't have to wear a separate one at all. One pair of swim trunks I got ds from target is like this. I know i've seen girls' suits like this too (though I haven't had to look for them in a while since dd is potty trained now).

And when we lived in FL and had our own pool, usually we didn't worry about a swim diaper anyway since it was our own pool! We'd just put dd in her suit and not worry about it!

But if you are looking for a cute swim diaper that can be worn with a t-shirt, I'm sure the ladies here will have lots of suggestions. The shell of a pocket diaper (or AIO with snap-ins, but leave the snap -ins out) would work great too.

Ok, sorry to be so long-winded....

Here's a link to the story..I saw the Amber Alert when I was working on at the gym..It caught my eye because it was near here..

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,159613,00.html

Thanks for the reassurance..I don't want to have to buy anything if I don't need it..But if I did need it I wouldn't mind..I just wanted to be safe..

Thanks again!!

I use a pocket with 1 hemp insert in case he pees in the car on the way to the waterpark. The restroom at the waterpark is questionable and I don't care for my kids to have their privates exposed in public. We are going to visit my om and he pool next week and I will most likely just use his swimsuit with a liner inside. Swim diapers are only designed to catch poop, since nothing can hold the pee in while they are in water. Disposable swim diapers are mostly made of Polyethylene, which is a common, NON-BIODEGRADGEABLE plastic used in grocery bags, milk jugs, etc.

We don't do swim diapers here. You can get little bathing suits from Carters (among others) that are shorts with a PUL-type fitted inside that will hold the poop if baby happens to go (and they're typically cheaper than a 'swim diaper'). At home I use a plain old nylon pull on basically just to keep the sand out of his bum with a pair of shorts (or without the shorts, LOL). I don't use anything that would get heavy when it's waterlogged for both comfort and safety.

Someone posted here last spring/summer that they were using a pocket diaper as a swim diaper and water filled up the pocket and almost pulled her baby down.

I will never use a pocket diaper for a swim diaper, but I am using:
- Righteous Baby swim diaper (Ann made these last year).
- Bathing suit with built-in diaper

I think I may one of the Bumpy ones too.

ITA w/Holli and grnmtnmama. I don't think pocket dipes should be used as swim diapers. The chances of them becoming hazardous are too great! Use a PUL cover or suit w/a built-in diaper...anything but pockets!

I found a swim dipe at target - it was with all the other swim stuff that has the built in dopes too - basically it is a little nylon shell with a terry lining - perfect b/c even though dd is 2 she will sometimes poop in the swim dipe and not tell us she needs to poop. it won't hold any pee though

i've found the huggies little swimmers WILL hold a pee, but hate the thought of using them.....

I agree with the mommas who say you shouldnt use the pocket dipe. I read thats ame story last year.
Just last week my friend was over and had her son in his fb with a hemp insert. I was inside so I never saw it but when i saw the dipe and insert sunning on my fence I asked her what was up and she told me it filled up with so much water it was sagging down to his knees.
we were just using a little plastic toddler pool.

I also agree that it is best to stear away from pockets as swim dipes. We have a Flap Happy suit with a diaper-esque liner (to hold poopies) and a Kushies swim dipe from ONe Step ahead. I love the OSA swim dipe because it is a wrap, and makes for easy clean-up.
It was less than $10 too!

I looked into this in the winter because we were attending a pool party and I didn't know what to use. I was also told the story of the mama who had her DC in a pocket diaper and it filled up with air (not water) and then her child got pushed over b/c the diaper was trying to make him float. Probably couldn't get his feet back under him. It would be scary!

She recommended using a true swim diaper or, if using a pocket, to have an insert in the pocket to give it some weight. I think it would be a fine line between enough weight. and too much weight, KWIM? So, while we have used an AIO shell in a pinch (for a babe in arms only, not a bigger kid swimming on their own) I got a little bikini top/swim diaper set at Target for us to use this summer. It was inexpensive and is really cute!

yes, I just want to confirm what adensmama said - it filled with air and made the abby go face down in the water.

this info should be stickied!! so many CD mamas would prob assume it is okay to use a pocket as a swim dipe and it could cause a terrible accident.

I just gave that original thread a good bumping!!
Sad story but so good to know!!
