Sara's turning three months on Saturday and I wanted to get some opinions on when I can take her to the spa to go swimming. It's a salt water pool, no chlorine, but it can be on the chilly side. I don't want her to get too cold, but she loves the water and both DH and I love to go swimming and want to include her in our trips to the pool.

Any opinions on what age is appropriate to start going swimming?

I started taking my baby to the saltwater pool when she was 10 days old. She loved it! It is really warm the, the water, and the pool room. We only went for about 15 minutes at a time anyway though.

Watch her to see if she is getting cold. You will probably be able to tell.

I was just thinking about this! I definitely want DD okay in the water. Her Daddy loves pools and the ocean, but I never learned to swim and could take or leave the water. I want her to be comfortable and learn to swim. I want to take her to a pool but am worried about the chemicals in them - how young is too young to go "swimming" with Mama? What age to kids start swimming lessons typically?

I'm a swim instructor (and part fish, I think). I started bringing DD in the water with me at around 6 weeks...ocean and cholorinated pool.

I'd say, make sure to only stay a short while and watch your kiddos' temperment. Then a nice warm shower or bath afterwards.

As for formal lessons, I'd say 3-3.5 have been the best starting swimmers I've had. Younger than that they have trouble following instructions and staying safe in a group class.
