This is very very frustrating. I finally made my birth plan to take with me to my appt tomorrow and thought that perhaps in the mean time I would do a little investigating on my own about my options. Ugh. what options? not to freaking many. The midwife I spoke with last week won't come this far- but I am welcome to go to her birth center if I want. which is fine. I understand that if you have a bunch of patients coming to you- you can't really beall over the state and taking care of everybody...

So I called a practice in Des Moines- that is being prosecuted and is closed. Then I called a practice in Council Bluffs that is currently not accepting new patients.

So back to google I go.... I find an outdated listing with another midwife who got out of prosecution by promising not to practice until it was perfectly legal/accepted in Iowa. But she gave me a name in South Dakota. I call her- she is out of state. But she will be in my area next week and is actually going to come to my house barring no babies being born then. No commitment on my part- but she said she would consider taking me on.

So I guess I am getting somewhere.... maybe.

I just find it strangely ironic that all these midwives are being prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license and they aren't actually doing anythign with medicine. grrr. stupid stupid ama

Sorry you are going through all of this in an unfriendly state.

I guess "they" consider looking after a pregnant woman to be "medical" which is so wanky cuz it's not like we are sick people who NEED medicine. Unfortunately there are those few instances that gets everyone all freaked about pregnancy- I know first hand of this too since I had pre-e with DS.

Depending on where you are, is it possible for you to see someone from MN? I hear MN has a pretty good "system" there and lots of birth options.

On the other hand a that birth center sounds really nice

It must be tough and stressful trying to find someone at this point.

FWIW, I had my first baby (over 10 years ago) at Iowa Lutheran in Des Moines. They were actually very natural birth friendly (well, for a hospital) at that time.

well in 2 hours I have an appt with my OB- I am bringing my birth plan and am really hoping that I am just worried for nothing and he will be totally cool with it. I am probably not giving him enough credit. My OB is really the best OB around by far- he is awesome- but very medical.... I will update how it goes.

It's ridiculous, but you're right, the AMA is just too big and powerful. They don't want people to wise up to the fact that the medical model for many things sucks. They want to squish out all the little guys so they can keep making their big money on drugs.

I hope you find the right solution and are at peace with it soon! Keep us posted!

Well- I went to my OB today for my regular appt. And we discussed my birth plan at length. DH went with me. We spent over an hour discussing things and it went really really well. There were only 2 items on it that we compromised on- an IV (well I agreed to a heplock- I totally knew that the no IV thing wouldn't fly), and cord cutting. Other than that my whole list was approved!

I feel so relieved now. I explained why I wanted each thing (or didn't want- whatever the case may be) and by showing that I had done my research on everything-- well it was a great and empowering experience.

DH still really wants to meet with a midwife- but honestly I kind of feel like we would be wasting her time because we can't afford someone out of network anyway. even if it cost more $3000 for a hbmw, we only have to pay $1000 for the hospital plus we get reimbursed $6000 for hospital coverage. So we would be out like $9000- if that makes any sense. And we just can't afford that.

But we are going to have to change out health insurance after the baby comes anyway- cause we can't afford it either- so I kinda think we should talk to her for next time regardless.

stupid money. but I feel so good about sticking up for myself! I even got my OB to admit that drugs can cause fetal distress. How stinking awesome (ya know what I mean- fetal distress is bad- but him admitting things like that is awesome!) is that?
