Syracuse area MDC moms

Who all here is from Syracuse and the nearby area? We're moving up there in the next couple weeks and I need to find 1) friends and 2) things to do.

My kids are 8, 6, 4, and 2. What cool things are there to do with children? We'll probably be living in Cicero.

We homeschool. Does anyone know any homeschooling groups or co-ops?

I think I answered another post of yours. I'm in Oswego (30-40 mins from Cicero, on Lake Ontaro). Homeschooling I'm useless on (my 15 month old doesn't need much schooling!) but I know there's at least one other MDC mom in the area.

There's a TON of stuff to do in the area during the summer and fall - festivals, swimming, lake stuff, farms, parks, the state fair, historical stuff... What does your family like? Winter is harder, I find. There's the zoo, which is open year round and has a lot of indoor exhibits. We have a membership there because it's cheaper than paying for admission even 2-3x per year. There is the MOST (museum of science and technology) which I've never been too but heard good things about, and the Canal museum, which is fun. There are also several nature centers, Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville (very close to you) is open year round and does a lot of winter activities.

I've only been here for 1.5 years so a lot of this is still fresh in my mind from having to find stuff myself. I'm down your way fairly regularly (there aren't many stores up here, they're all down your way) so PM me if you want to get together sometime. Or if you need more info!

I'll see if I can send the other MDC mama I know about this way, she may have more info for you.

Welcome to CNY!!

I only have a second, but I wanted to welcome you to the CNY area and give you a few links.

I've lived in this area all my life (currently in Oswego County) and I think you'll love it. There is a very active Yahoo group of Syracuse area AP parents and a GREAT homeschooling group with a lively co-op: http://homelearnersofcny.com/default.aspx

There is lots to do...Beaver Lake Nature Center, the zoo, farmers markets, parks, the MOST, lots of skiing, etc. in the winter, the State Fair is here...tons more but I have to run!

Again, welcome!

Angela, I totally did not read your post before I answered! So yeah, what she said!

There's an indoor playspace in Phoenix (not far from Cicero) called Kidzclub that can be fun in the winter. At least a nice space for running around. Oh! And of course, Music Together in ********* for the littles. There also is is a gym that does homeschool open gym time, and in addition to the HS group I mentioned above there are local LEAH chapters (Christian HS organization). http://www.leah.org/

There are also several MOMS Clubs in the area and the AP group does do occasional playgroups. There is also a Holistic Moms Network chapter.

And, yes, if you'd ever want to get together, drop a PM! I'm down in North Syracuse all the time!

How do you find all that stuff? In Baltimore, we have a couple good parenting yahoogroups and an online bulletin board.
Ok, I found the Holistic Moms chapter:

Is anyone here a part of that?

There's a kinda touristy central new york guide that has a lot of events in it. A lot of businesses (restaurants, the grocery store, etc) give them away. I'm not sure if it has an online edition, I'll have to find mine and see if I can get you more detail.

The public libraries often have fliers, etc. of what's going on and the Onondaga County Parks website is a good help too. Also Syracuse.com and 9wsyr.com are good places to follow the news online and see what's up.

Also here's the Regional Market info: http://www.nyfarmersmarket.com/regio...alonondaga.htm.

I am! I am the activities coordinator for our HMN chapter in Syracuse. I live in Bridgeport which is about 10 minutes down Rte 31 from Cicero. I have a 5 yo dd and a 1 yo ds.

I also homeschool. I do not belong to the hacny.com coop (there is a fee to join but you don't need to join if you just want to take a class here or there.)but know a lot of the members. Here is the forum (which is free) http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spa...UserID=1044757

Thanks Meksmama!

We'll be arriving this coming Sunday (Oct. 4th) and I want to find things to do quick so the kids can make new friends.
Definitely think about the HLACNY co-op! Session 1 ends soon (but I bet you could come hangout for a day and visit-- a mama did that last week) and Session 2 starts 10/23. I'm teaching a class!!
