DS is 2 3/4 and recently had his first visit with the dentist, who said that the pacifier is changing the shape of the roof of his mouth and forcing his front teeth out (which you can see), so it's time for them to go. He's never had a lovey (and we tried, and tried) but truly loves his binkys. He has 4 or 5 in his bed and sleeps with one in his mouth and one in each hand.
We did a lot of talking with him about what was going to happen and why (so much easier when we can just tell him that the doctor said it's hurting his teeth), and then we went to the toy store last weekend and he got to pick out one toy and one stuffed animal, paid for with his binkys.
I've done a lot of talking to Baby Elmo (that's the stuffed animal he chose) about how I want him to give DS hugs and kisses if he wakes up at night and misses his binkys, etc. etc. but every night since the weekend DS has woken up in a RAGE and refuses to have anything to do with Elmo. He starts off by crying for his binkys but it often will digress in to the most random things (last night he was SCREAMING
about the water in his sippy cup being the wrong temperature) and will last for almost an hour. I stay with him, but he often starts flailing and kicking and then I get out of his bed and sit next to him, rubbing his arms and legs.
I am hopeful that this is going to get better with time, but I'm looking for any thoughts or advice you mamas have. I realize this is a HUGE loss for him, and I'm trying to talk with him a lot about how hard I know it is and how proud I am that he's doing something that's good for him, even though it's hard. We also talk a little about being sad, but that seems like a much harder concept for him to grasp.
BTW, usually after his rages in the middle of the night he sleeps through til morning and then wakes up all happy and smiley... the only way we know we didn't dream the whole thing is that he is hoarse!
