DS is a gagger...he gags on his own spit, his fingers and pretty much anything else he can get in his mouth. We've just started giving him tastes of food (he's a few days shy of 6 months, sitting unassisted, has lost his tongue thrust and has been reaching for food for a while) He does a ton of gag-y/coughing but it seems to be more of a "what's up with this solid substance I'm swallowing?" than a reaction to the food. In that, he's only getting small amounts of soft stuff and it's not coming back out. He ends up swallowing it and after he has a couple bites he stops doing it.

Any thoughts? DH is intensely concerned with him choking but I've seen him hack up big chunks of stuff he can't handle so I'm not really worried.

No answers from me, but I'm curious about what others say. I've got a gagger on my hands too. Scares the life out of me when he does it with food.

DS has an over active gag reflex. As he gets older it gets less agitated and he can swallow bigger pieces of food. Mostly he can only eat something that dissolves, like bread or cracker, but he will eat soft chunks or things like noodles.

Hmm, I don't know, DD never had such a sensitive gag reflex, but she definitely did gag frequently with BLW Mostly I watched and tried to stay calm, think of it just like taking a few bumps while learning to walk - just part of the process. The only times I got a little concerned were when DD was struggling silently - happened maybe 2x - and she got coughing quickly. Those times I definitely did some back thumping, and started getting her out of the booster in case I needed to do a little baby Heimlich!! Coughing is key - means baby is dealing with problem just fine.
