i am going back next week for a 2nd in-person interview and feel pretty sure that they are going to offer me a contract. I'm looking for information on neighborhoods, schools, shopping/farmer's markets/csa and hb midwives. ds is 8, dd is 5 and new baby will be joining us in September.

TIA

Could I have the info as well? We grow a lot of our own produce, but I would love to support someone local.
I live 25 minutes from Joplin and sadly can't really help with midwife info. There is a large Minnonite community and I believe most of them use midwives and home birth. There are also CNM's in practce with OB's, but from what I've heard it's pretty much standard medical model type stuff.
If you are birthing in a hospital, you will want to find out if your insurance is for St. John's. That is the one in Joplin that has the baby room in with you and you really don't see the nurses much at all. The other hospital has nurses keep the babies most of the time and you have to ask for your baby to nurse, etc.
What type of neighborhood are you looking for? The area is not as homongenous as it used to be, but I would still say overall it's a fairly typical midwestern community.
Good luck with your interview.

I really want a hb mw - if I can't find one, uc is something I am willing to consider. hospital isnt an option I am willing to deal with. Won't have insurance - will be paying out of pocket.

I want a good school for dd and ds (elementary ages), access to park w/in walking distance of house, house not apartment to rent, willing to consider Carthage as well as Joplin.
Thanks for the replies. I'm getting excited.

I can tell you right now that the mennonite will be of no help to you. They are great people but the insurance wont let you. We have Amish where I live at some loophole in the law lets them practice midwifery among the amish but the midwife are forbidden from even giving pregnacy related advice to "english"

I would continue to get medical/prenatal care even if you plan a UC. Dont want some chumped up charges of medical neglect of a newborn. You can always say the baby came quick and you had no time to call an ambulance. But you cant say you did not know you were pregnat with a house full of baby things LOL.

For Natural food type stores in Joplin I can think of

Suzzanes and Fox Farms.

If you are particualry religious many many church schools. I went to south school (neosho) as a child. It was ok.

I live just north of Joplin, but grew up in Joplin.

There is a midwife north of here that will do a homebirth. I know someone that is planning one.

Joplin has done a pretty good job upgrading the parks.

The farmer's market in Webb City is pretty nice. They have meat, fruit, veg, local honey, etc. I think it is nicer than the one in Carthage.

I'd love to have the info on the homebirth mw if you can share

and I'm happy to hear that there are decent farmer's markets in the area - love some local grown produce.
