We are currently searching for a house and now we are thinking about the Mt. Airy/Germantown section. But I am a little nervous about living in the city... does anyone have any advice and/or experience about or with this section of town? Any streets/parts to avoid like the plague? Any recomended streets? Thanks for any input.

Hi, mama!

I'll pm you, but basically I love Mt Airy and Germantown! So many cool things about the area. Lots of crunchy NFL families.
Have you visited the website:

We can't afford it, but I'd love to live anywhere near:

Mt Airy day is coming up May 6th - that gives a sense of a lot of what's wonderful.

Philly's a complicated city; issues of race & class are many-layered. Probably true of a lot of places. But I feel that the richness, cultural diversity, opportunities and experiences of living in a city are so worthwhile. It's important to me to have my family live around many different kinds of people. And then there's still many georgeous parks, woods to walk in. I don't feel like there's anything we miss out on. Except malls. :LOL

Search this forum, I think there are other discussions on this neighborhood.

Good luck in your search!

I love Mt. Airy (and West Phila) and feel that either neighborhood is a great place to live/raise a family - very community-minded, multi-cultural and positive vibes.

I'd like to live there - if we could afford it (ha!)
My partner grew up there, and his parents still live there. It's gorgeous! I wouldn't call it "living in the city" exactly, as it's not crowded and certainly doesn't have inner-city crime levels. The regional rail train is wonderful.

I've done a lot of walking around the area, including late at night. It seems pretty safe to me (and always has been, in my partner's experience) and is quiet, southwest of Stenton Avenue. On the other side of Stenton is not so nice.

The one thing that keeps me from wanting to live there is that you have to drive for a lot of daily needs. The only supermarket I'm aware of is in a gigantic strip-mall (at Willow Grove & Crittenden) that's a long walk from everything but the ugly newish apartment complexes right next to it. Germantown Avenue is a fun street for window-shopping, but a lot of the stores are pricey and sell more artsy than pratical things. Lots of good restaurants though.

We just relocated to West Mt. Airy about a month and a half ago. It is truly an amazing neighborhood. I don't even know where to begin. It is a beautiful neighborhood. I just love to walk around and look at the trees and the stone houses. We live in walking distance to Fairmount Park which is awesome.
The people that live in the greater area are so welcoming. We know all of our neighbors. Everyone looks out for each other. We have had parties and play dates galore. The kids have a blast playing with the other kids. There are kids everywhere on our block.
We didn't have a car for about the first month. We were lucky because we live within walking distance of the coop and a train station. We had some issues without a car, but it was a nice challenge.
We homeschool and we have a great group of families in the area. If you are looking at the public schools one of my neighbors has a monthly meeting at their house for families who are interested in the Houston school.

If there is anything else you would like to know I'll be happy to help.

There was a small article on Mt. Airy in the April issue of O Magazine.

I've been scouring Phillyblog, this site, and friends who know about the area - we too are looking at moving there (we've been living in Olde City for the past 3 or so years, and it's not enough of a community feel which I would like, plus the party scene is getting tired) - Mt. Airy seems the way to go!

Would be great to meet other Mums in the area once we've moved too (we got a verbal agreement, home inspection is Thursday! and then there's the financing bit). We've got a darling 3 week old baby girl.

I'm also looking at walking clubs (or organazing one) - those with young ones who want to go for nature walks in the woods, if not just around the block.

BTW, there are a few major food stores besides the lovely little Co-op (try Acme on Sedwick and Germantown Ave.; SuperFresh in chestnut Hill between Willow Grove and Mermaid Ave. at Market Square shopping center; and there's a veg market every day called Top of The Hill Market just behind Germantown Ave. on Evergreen; this all thanks to our very capable realtor, Zeta Cross who lives in the area).

Also, know of any places in W. Mt. Airy (I know there's the little place across the street from the Co-op) and maybe Chestnut Hill where a Pre-natal yoga teacher, and Mommies and Babies yoga would be of value (am one and once ready to teach again, I would love to)?

Oh yeah, we don't have a car either (we've lived without one since we both came to the States 5 or so years ago!), but will probably have to cave and buy one.

Hey Guys,

Thinking about moving to Mt. Airy again. We would probably have to send the kids to a private school. Anyone have any names and recs. for schools (that are not too, too $$$)? TIA

Chestnut Hill Hospital offers prenatal yoga classes. You may want to inquire about a position there.
Mt. Airy is a nice area. It's like many Philly neighborhoods -- some streets are perfectly safe and well-kept, others are not. You'll get a feel for the areas to be avoided once you're there.
I also wanted to mention that a very well-known midwife lives in that area, Iris Wolfson. She no longer does births but still practices well-woman care, counselling, energy work and I believe some shaman-type stuff. She's my therapist for PPD. She is an incredible woman.
