So my girl name has always been Anna Grace. I think it's timeless and beautiful, not too trendy and is appropriate for a baby and still womanly. I thought I was pretty set on it. That is until I found out I'm actually having a girl. Dh and I are just not feeling it.
My sons' names are Ryan and Zane. We liked the continuity of another "an" 4 letter name. But I hate the way Ryan, Zane and Anna sounds. It sounds like a stutter ananananaa. Ugh.
So we really love Abby now (Abigail Grace). I like the way Ryan, Zane and Abby sounds. But I don't know how I feel about her having the only name we use a nickname/shortened name for. And while Anna fits with the boys' names Abby is decidedly more girly.
I lean toward Abby then find myself saying Anna. So clearly a little stuck. I would love to hear y'alls thoughts

I love Abby but then again, my youngest daughter is an Abigale so I might be a bit biased

I don't know what it is with Anna. It was THE name that I was going to use if I had a girl for years and then when I was actually pregnant with a girl I didn't want to use it (and for no specific/good reason). I've thought about it this time now that I'm pregnant with another girl but for some reason I'm still not feeling it... and it's such a good name!

Anais is an "an" name that's pretty nickname proof, but it's also prone to being mispronounced. I go back on forth on using it because I really like Anais Nin, but my husband isn't really into it. According to my name book (published 2006) Anais is/was really hot in France right now.

That is so funny and exactly how I feel. Anna has been my girl name fo 4 years and now that I have the chance to use it I'm not loving it. So strange. It IS such a great name.

Haha! In the ultrasound she kept opening and closing her hands with all her fingers together like little crab claws so I told my husband "Crabby Abby"
I think it's important to think about what they could be called too but I still love Abby. My name is April and when I was little my Dad came up with Aparilla Gorilla rilla and still calls me Rilla -WTH? I've been called Apey and more...random.
Someone will come up with something whether it rhymes or not.

I think so too! I love that it's so girly after having two boys

i think Abby sounds lovely with Ryan and Zane! And while it is elegant it still has spunk to it, in my opinion-perfect for a little girl with two big brothers to wrap around her little finger

In Russia, where I come from, there are so many Anna's...but there Anna would be called Anna once she was older...when a baby/child it would be Anya, with the "n" being very soft.

eta: so interesting to see someone mention Anais-it is on my girl name list, although not at the top...and it means Grace!

He said "Yes!" with accompanying fist pump when she (the ultrasound tech) told him.

Why not name her Abby straight up instead of naming her Abigail and calling her Abby?

And I agree that people will make up crazy nicknames whether or not they rhyme or make any sense.

I think both names are lovely! I totally had that experience with a different name, btw. I wanted to name my DD a certain name since I was a kid, and all through pregnancy we were going to use it, and then I was like 8 months pregnant and just like "eh." So we went with something wildly different. All I could think was that maybe that was the name of my dream baby, and then when I had a real baby it was like that name was already taken. That sounds weird, and I don't mean it like I had an imaginary child or anything... I just mean I think I had thought about it so much and just ASSUMED that my DD would have that name, and when it came time to actually use it I got cold feet.

And FWIW I wouldn't worry too much about nicknames. I don't think she'll really give it much thought that she has a nickname and her brothers don't: especially since kids are weird and she'll probably go through a phase where she insists everyone uses her real name and meanwhile Ryan will decide he only answers to his middle name and Zane wants to be called Z-Z. As for the rhymey nicknames, if someone wants to tease your kid, they will. And if nothing rhymes, they'll just go with the old standard of "poopy head" or whatever.

So I love both, but think that Abigail is a lovely classic name that will work well through her whole life! Abby as a cute nickname and then Abigail if she wants to be a serious lawyer type.

I'll just say that I'm an Anna and have really enjoyed my name. I also like the name Abby and see what you mean about it fitting a bit better w/ your boys name... good luck in deciding.... maybe when you see her face you have a better feeling. Either way you can't go wrong.

Honestly, I love to think that on her wedding invitation she can use Abigail or that she has that choice as an adult.

Weird how things turn out isn't it. I would have never guessed that once I started saying it more I wouldn't love it as much. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's so beautiful but I just don't think it's HER. *sigh*
What a vote for Anna. I have always liked my name too and I think that says a lot.
Thanks!
