I have a mystery smell, and I'm not quite sure what it is. We have a "no dogs on the carpet rule", so the bedroom and family room are gated, leaving them the rest of the (hard floored) house. However, my male JRT has some separation anxiety issues that, if left unchecked, cause him to occasionally mark. He's been known to pee through the gates so I'm assuming this is his pee.. though I have not *seen* him do it.

So anyway, the other day I noticed walking into the bedroom that it smelled like pee. I have a hyper sense of smell, and NO ONE else seems to be able to smell it (and living in a dog family I feel totally ok saying to my SIL "hey come over here and tell me if you think that smells like dog pee" ). But alas, no one else smells it.

AND, we just got the carpets professionally cleaned on Wednesday (though I was smelling it before then).

Last night I wiped the gate down with natures miracle, and got in the door jam, in the corners, and along the baseboards, and yet today I STILL smell it.

Tonight I was down on my hands and knees sniffing the door jam, the walls, the carpet, and it all smells clean and fresh. Yet, as soon as I walk through the door I smell what I think smells like pee.

If it's pee it HAS to be on/near the door jam, because like I said, dogs aren't allowed on the carpet, but I've wiped it all down and yet it's still there.

*sigh*

I need a way to see if it's even pee, and if it's not, I have to keep looking for the mystery smell. I hate mystery smells. :

When I've used one you have to get the room TOTALLY dark, but it does work reasonably well in that case. If you've got windows, you need to block them off with quilts--I mean TOTALLY dark.

I find, though, that mystery smells pool in doorways even when they come from somewhere else. So just because you can smell it there doesn't mean it's from there. Check other areas and other vertical surfaces before you do more cleaning of the doorway.

I sniffed the rest room in all the other hot spots that he might have peed on if he got left alone in there, but they all smell clean. We have two sets of french doors in our bedroom that open on the porch, one of which is blocked off by our dresser, so I'm going to pull that out today and see if maybe the door jam is leaking and is moldy or something. After my sniff testing last night I don't think it's pee, so you're probably right, the smell is probably coming from somewhere else and I just notice it when I walk into the room.

I think I know certain little toddler who climbed onto the dresser and poured an unknown liquid into a decorative vase that had pot pourri in it.

When getting ready to move the dresser I noticed a gray ring of sludge around the bottom of my vase, and sure enough, when I picked it up it sloshed around, and when I held it up to my nose to sniff it, it made my eyes water with that pungent, sour, urine like smell that someone tried to cover with pot pourri. I'm guess it's all mildewey and decomposing because of the moisture. I dunno. I didn't get close enough to find out. It's on the back porch now. The jury is still out as to whether or not I'm going to try to save the vase. I had no idea that flooded pot pourri could smell like pee.

:puke

But I'm happy that it wasn't Rhino peeing, we've been very diligent with him lately and I'm glad this wasn't a set back.

Phew.
