What is this? Anyone have any info?

I have a friend who is ill with pneumonia right now. He said his doctor put him on Tamiflu. I have heard of the name, don't know anything about it. He knows about all you crazy people who question doctors/drugs/etc so he told me to go see what you all think

Thanks!

Hi, Steph:

Tamiflu is the trade name of oseltamivir, a drug used to prevent or treat influenza A or B infections. Oseltamivir works against influenza A and B by inhibiting neuraminidase, a protein that sits on the surface of flu viruses and is essential for replication of the virus.

I'd include more, but I have twin babies who need some attention! If you google either "tamiflu" or "oseltamivir", you will get plenty of stuff.

Hope your friend is feeling better.

I'll just add that Tamillu may decrease the length of time you experience symptoms of the flu by 1 - 2 days. It may also help to reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others.

Also check these pages about Tamiflu on FDA and official Tamiflu website

Just wanted to add that when I've taken Tamiflu, it reduced the severity of symptoms from Influenza A *and* prevented the 6-8 weeks of coughing which normally follows the infection. I avoided the coughing and secondary respiratory infections, which was very nice, as I'd dealt with Influenza A (severe case) in the previous flu season. The sky high fevers were bad enough, but the two months of chest-wracking coughs? Ugh. That triggered my first bout of costochondritis.
