I was in Super Target last night and wandered through the baby section. On the feeding aisle, they had little markers separating the different types of products. There was one that said "Avent Feeding"...one that said "Gerber Feeding"...one that said "toddler feeding"...and one -- where the breastpads and milk bags were -- that said "natural feeding."

I didn't know whether to be happy that they considered BFing "natural" or irritated that they didn't just say "breastfeeding."

: Either way, I thought it was interesting.

Hrm...it does say a lot about our culture.
One thing that I think is great about Target (at least the ones here in KC) is that they keep the formula by the medicines rather than in the baby section. I think that potentially sets up a much healthier mindset about ABM than most stores do (i.e., that it's not a normal way to feed a baby). Now only if they'd make it available exclusively by prescription...

I think "Natural Feeding" is great! When choosing a feeding method, natural vs. artificial seems like a much more accurate way to put it than breast vs. bottle.

It seems like people (ok, I'm generalizing) who make the initial choice to feed artificially do so based on the method of delivery (y'know, because breasts are for decoration), without giving as much weight to the actual food. Natural/artificial puts the emphasis where it belongs, on the milk or milk substitute.

I like calling it "natural feeding!" I was staying with a friend of a friend on vacation, and they asked if they needed to buy some milk or formula for the baby or if she was fed "naturally." I hadn't heard that before but I was so proud to say "naturally!" They are a gay couple (male) with no kids so I was quite impressed.
JMHO! And has anybody else noticed that Target carries slings now?? at least in Georgia.

I like that term. I think that the word breastfeeding is a poor choice for several reasons. For one thing, right or wrong, many people in our society are afraid to say breast. Just like they're afraid to say penis, vagina, or many other words. But most importantly, all milk comes from breasts. (Except rice milk and soy milk, but those aren't real milks.) The way I see it, anyone drinking milk is drinking breastmilk. If we're going to call human milk breastmilk, I think we should start calling cow's milk cow's breastmilk.

I like 'natural feeding' thats what it IS! (so then, yes, the other sections should be 'artificial feeding')

OT: also, I know what you mean about people not liking the word 'natural' my mom and sis roll their eyes when I give their kids some 'natural' snacks or whatever, but then they are eating ice cream, and i ask what kind, and they say its 'breyers' and I say, oh, you buy that...and they say 'its the only kind to buy, its all natural' like its a DIFFERENT word all of a sudden???!!!!?? I guess there needs to be more commercials for 'natural' things like breastfeeding...then it can be drilled and washed into peoples heads like breyers

I support the term natural feeding. I never realized that Formula isn't kept in the baby section at Target, but your right. Mine also has formula in the medicine section. We do not have slings at our Target. What brand do they carry?

I can't remember the name of the brand because I stopped using it in favor of my maya wrap :heart. I do know that Wal-Mart carrys several other types of baby carriers made by the same company and a shopping cart cover made by the same company. It was $29.99 and that is basically all I can remember.

Thanks for the interesting and thoughtful responses. I hope I didn't come across as not supporting the term "natural feeding." Of course, I think breastfeeding is natural! I think a little of my inability to commit to an opinion on the issue was grounded in the fact that I recognize our society's hesitance to use the word "breast" -- like it's a dirty word or something. My gut reaction was to wonder whether they said "natural" because they didn't want to offend anyone by saying "breast." But I agree that deeming it "natural" is great!

I actually like the term "natural feeding". It seems very appropriate.

Target carries the NoJo sling here. I am using it, and will pass it on to my sister once my new Chinese wrap arrives since Avery is too big for it any more (the NoJos are really shallow). My Target super center carries organic coffee, milk, cheese, fruits, veggies, etc. We don't have a health food store near by, so I run to target for a lot of things.

I love target even MORE!!!!! im gonna check out ours to see if it says Natural too!!!!!
just something sorta in the way of term:: my 5 yr old niece who was not bf and does not see it was over the other day and i was getting ready to nurse dd. Anna was sitting there waiting patiently and niece says'whats wrong, what happened" like this would be the reason she was sitting there-- so, i say" im going to nurse her , nothing happened, shes waiting" niece asks after looking a little bewildered" are you a doctor?" I said" oh no, Nursing means Im going to Breastfeed her, that will help her feel better since she's sick." I still dont think she got it but it did make her think.
It's sooo sad when this kind of thing happens.(the bewilderment) KIds need to see it!!!!! My kids are sure to know cause I always talk about it. when my dd is playing with her dolls and the baby "cries" I say oh you need to nurse your baby.

A bit OT, but all the Targets should say "natural", they really try to keep everything as similar as possible from store to store. And I never paid attention to the fact that abm is near the pharmacy, not infants, but I love that!

And, really OT but good to know - Monday afternoons or Tuesday mornings are the best days of the week to shop at Target for a deal on infants or childrens clothing - if prices go down on clearance items, they are marked on Mondays. Happy shopping!
