So I'm considering a tattoo. Except that I'm not...because I'm a needle phobe and I don't think I could ever actually bring myself to do it.

What does it feel like? How long would it take if I were going to do one that was only like 1.5-2 inches square and not very complicated?

This is something I've wanted for a long time, but I just can't get past the needle part. Understand that it's not the pain. I handled birthing two babies naturally really well.... and didn't cry after breaking bones and such. I have a very high pain threshold, I just can't stand the thought of a needle being inside me. Is this something I could get past for a short time to do this thing that I really want? Has anyone else done it?

Also, I'm still not sure about what to get. I have always wanted something that symbolizes peace/acceptance and also has some earth symbolism. I like the dove and olive branch symbol, but would love some other ideas as well.

Thanks!

My mom totally hates needles and blood, even tiny bits. I thought she'd never even consider a tattoo. Not only did she get a larger one on her shoulder blade, she said it wasn't that bad. I have 2, a smaller one on my tummy and then a large one on my leg. I think pain has to do mostly with location. I could have fallen asleep during the leg one. The tummy one hurt. My tattoo guy (for my leg one) plays movies that takes your mind off things too. You can wear headphones/music if the noise bugs you. Really though, its not bad... I find tattoos addicting, lol. You don't see a needle and its so very tiny. It doesnt go in far at all, just the surface really.

I hate needles too, just looking at them or thinking about them makes me nauseous and light headed. I just don't look while they are tattooing me. I have 6 tattoos and it doesn't even bother me to get it done.

About that size and not complicated, I would say maybe 1 hour or 1.5 hours. To me it feels like an annoying burning feeling or a hamster biting you over and over in the same spot. Once it stops or they move to a different spot then the pain goes away completely. It only hurts right as they are on a spot. But some spots don't hurt at all and some are super sensitive. It depends on the nerves in that area. And usually, the outline hurts worse than them coloring in an area, because they use one or two "needles" for the outline and up to 6 at a time on the fill-in parts. But, really, it doesn't hurt that bad at all.

Also, they aren't really needles like you think about. It doesn't look like a needle and it moves so fast and vibrates so fast that it's more like a vibrating pen that hurts. Really, it's nothing like a needle to me.

I didn't find it nearly as bad as people describe it. The idea was much worse than the actual feeling.

Mine's pretty small, but the outline (the black ink) hurt worse. That may have been because they did that first and by the time they did the color, I was numb.

I didn't watch it being done for the most part. Mine's on my belly so I was laying back trying to think of other things and keep my stomach from moving.

I also have a fear of needles. I come close to a panick attack when its time to give blood, and I avoided the gluclose test my second pregnancy for this very reason.

To me, the tattoo is a different needle, therefore it doesnt bother me as much. Something about the needle going INTO MY VEINS is what gets me, but just beneath the skin just doesnt freak me out for some reason.

Got one yesterday! It's huge and took about 5 hours. I hate needles too, but I do really well with pain. I don't mind the tattooists needle because it's more like a little scratch, and doesn't go in deep like with anaesthesia at the dentist, or anything like that. I also like that you just see the machine while you are being tattooed, and the needle isn't visible to you, really.

Go for it!

I'm a big fan of mining medieval iconography for tattoos. I used Kells and the Book of Dwarrow for my latest. There are many nature-based themes in medieval manuscripts.

I saw one of those tattoo things, and honestly, it looked more like an over large pen than a needle. And if you don't look I doubt it would actually feel like a needle.

I would agree with a previous poster - depending upon the level of detail it could range from taking 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

I remember it not being painful - annoying yes, except for where the needle went over bone. That was a bit yowza a couple of times. My second is on the top of my foot - solid black took 30 minutes about 1"x1" and its a kanji meaning mind, heart, soul and I barely remember any of it except for the artist's dreamy eyes....

Good luck and have fun!!

I was totally freaked out by needles until I got my first tattoo. I got a small 4 inch one on my wrist, it was black ink and meant the world to me.

Since then I am not scared to give myself a shot, get an IV or donate blood lol. It really wasn't that painful.

Placement has a lot to do with pain. Something on a bone would hurt much more then something on a thicker fatty piece of skin.

Like the one on my upper arm felt like nothing compared to the one I got on my spine.

All my "on bone" tattoos were very painful.

I consider tattoos on feet to be the most painful.. I think of it like labor kinda, in the end the pain was worth it and you have something that will stay with you forever.

I hope you get it!

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I had considered my right shoulder blade for location, but is that a painful spot? What about off-center lower back?

I like this one: http://th03.deviantart.com/fs14/300W...y_steffi66.jpg but I really am looking for something with very simple lines, more artsy.

I also like the celtic Tree of Life, and something circular for the imagery really appeals to me, but I'm still looking.

Just sayin', if you really want a non-specific tattoo but don't have a design you LOVE, I'd wait until you find the perfect design and then sit on the decision for a bit. Because you won't have "a" tattoo on your body forever, you'll have THAT tattoo - which merits a more definite response than "yeah, that one's pretty nice", you know?

As for the pain, could you take drugs/get hypnotised/down Rescue Remedy or something beforehand?

Oh yeah, definitely not going to do this tomorrow. Just tossing around ideas right now till I find something I fall in love with.
