Teacher moms- Anyone teach for private schools

Hi,

I'm looking at going back to teaching in the classroom at a small private school. We are talking about pay. This is the situation. I would be teaching
2-3 grades. I would have a total of 7 kids. I set my own curriculum. I can wear jeans. I don't need to turn in lesson plans. I can run my classroom the way I want it. (Yes, a teacher's dream).

With all that said we are talking about pay. They are offering $1600 a month. They only other benefit I would have is ds tuition is paid for. It's $5,000 a school year. She talked about health insurance but not sure what the cost is.
They are paying only 9 months a year. I also have to pay self employment tax.

So this brings me to my questions. Is this normal pay? If I was teaching in the public school I would make at least $2500 gross a month. Should I ask for more pay? Should I ask for my health insurance to be paid for? I'm just lost in the private school industry. Any advice would help.

IME private schools pay quite a bit less salary than PS. I'm currently on the market, and from what I've seen, h-ere, starting for teachers w/a Master's in public school is anywhere from 45,000-50,000; and private school is 40,000 or so with parochial schools significantly less. Plus the private schools are not part of the state retirement system which is a huge, huge benefit. The big draw to private school is the working conditions (as you've discussed!)
My mom taught in a private school for 6 years. She eventually had to leave because she needed to get back into the state retirement system. Working in the public school she is making about $45,000 a year. She was making less than $30,000 at the private school.
Yup, salaries are generally less than in public schools. But that job does sound appealing. 7 STUDENTS!

But the pay situation seems weird. Self employment tax? Most private schools are set up to pay you themselves. Maybe it's an issue of size, I don't know.
I worked at a private school for three years (2000-2003).

I taught 6-8 grade SS and English. 16-24 students per class.

I received 11,000 a year the first year + housing (a studio apt.) and "basic" medical insurance. My final year, it was 12,020.

I loved the job...I left b/c I got married and moved cross-country.
I work at a Catholic high school and our entry level teachers earn about 75% of public school entry level teachers and our veteran teachers earn about 60% of veteran public school teachers.
Starting teachers in public schools with bachelors make about 34.
Charters much less and I guess catholic even less.

In public schools - they pay your insurance - other schools you seem to have to pay a portion of it.

Im wrestling right now with an offer from a charter school. Its a nice school but I would be losing a good deal of money. When you got cute chubby cheeks to feed at home - money talks.
We are at $1600 a month. That breaks down to 13.65 an hour with ds tution and before taxes. I have a job at home for $12.00. It's only part time. It may only last until Dec. I'm thinking of asking for health insurance ds and I. Dh company pays for his.

On the other hand. DS will be 5 feet from my classroom and in an excellent classroom. DH and I will have around $2000 left over each month to do a we need to do with if I take it. It's also about 10 minutes from my house. The job is my dream teaching setting.
