Tear Free Natural/Organic kids shampoo?

1413 Views 15 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  fremontmama
Alright, DH wants DD to have tear free shampoo. I want organic shampoo. Is there a compromise? i don't want DD to have stinging, teary eyes either... but I don't want to be putting chemicals in her hair.

I am part of a Food club and some of the available brands are:

Alba Botanical
ALOE VERA
AMAZONIA PRECIOSA
AURORA GROUP
AURORA HENNA
AVALON NATURAL PRODUCTS
BEAUTY WITHOUT CRUELTY
BETTER BOTANICALS
BIOTECH CORPORATION
BRONZO SENSUALE
CALIFORNIA BABY
CAMOCARE PRODUCTS
COMMON SENSE
DESERT ESSENCE
DRUIDE BODY CARE

The list goes on and I'm sure every natural or organic company you can think of is in the cataloge I have... but I have no clue if ANY fit in a compromisable area for DH and I.

ANy and all help would be appreciated.

Some of those I'm familiar with for baby shampoo. California Baby has parabens in it (and kind of costly as I recall). I am familiar with Avalon products as I use them so I would consider them as they are organic. I have actually used their lavender shampoo on my DD (she's 3 1/2). I think Dessert Essence and Alba are good choices but Alba might have parabens. I've heard of Aurora but not sure about their kid's shampoo. But I think they are organic, no? My daughter didn't really get hair until she was 2. I used Burt's Bees shampoo bar and also Tom's of Maine baby shampoo/body wash. Now I am using Jason Kids shampoo and it's wonderful. Check labels and go to www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep.
I had Jason (shampoo/body wash) for Ds and when I used that it brought out exama(?sp?) in him that I never even knew he had. Also when I tried only useing the lotion it just made him red all over. the odd thing was it claimed to be safe when useing if you had exama(again sp?). As soon and I stoped useing it on him all of they exama went away and has never come back. I e amiled the company and they never replied. I now use eighter pure olive oil soap (for his skin) and BS(for his hair) or extra sensitive Clifornia baby bodywash and shampoo.

Karen and Baby Joe
You can go no-poo! My dd has had soap in her hair twice in her two years (due to clumps of maple syrup) but just water often gets everything out. AS they get older and their hair gets oily or what not I will have to look more closely at no-poo but then, I may already be doing it for me by then.

Well, it's hard for me to check the labels of these as I am buying them out of a wholesale catalouge and I have tried to start looking at their websites, but some of them are so VAUGE about the ingredients lists... (Like the Jason's one, their site says most things are only 70% organic...
: but I could find no actual list.) and with 31 pages of Shampoo products I just KNOW I won't get through all the websites before orders are due.

As for the no poo thing, we've been non intentionally not using shampoo since we ran out of the Johnson and Johnson DH had gotten, but he REALLY wants to use shampoo in her hair. He isn't comfortable with this no poo idea, kids basic or the adult version. mwahaha. So I want to have more natural/organic shampoo and he wants a tear free type. I know if I don't get some kids tear free organic/natural shampoo in this next food club co-op order DH will be at the grocery store getting Johnson and Johnson's.
heh heh.

Thank you those for all of your ideas/opinions. I really appreciate them. I think I might have 1/2 a Burt's Bee's shampoo bar somewhere from awhile back, maybe he'd use that while I'm searching on all these brands... ??

The march-April Mothering mag listed a site to check products for chemicals. The one I wrote down for kid shampoo is Aubrey Organics Natural Baby and Kids Shampoo. It had a rating of 0.3 on a scale 0-5, 5 being the most toxic.

www.drugstore.com carries TONS of natural brands of beauty care products. I never order I just get the info I need. They have the ingredient list and feedback from customers about the products.

Question for you guys, have any of you heard of or used the Arbonne line of baby care or adult products? Supposedly they are all natural and only contain plant derived ingredients. Any opinions?
OK, what about Nature's Gate? I've looked on that website that rates it, and it's a .06 for the brand I'm looking at:

but some of the ingredients I can't pronounce, does that mean it's still like, organic?

I picked this 'poo up after I read the Mothering article and went to the Skindeep site. I warned DH that although it was the safest bet for a kids shampoo, it wouldn't be tear-free. So we're careful to avoid getting it in DS1 and 2's eyes when we rinse. That said, I'm certain we've gotten rinse suds in their eyes a time or two. No problems. No tears. Not a single indication that their eyes were irritated. So fwiw, I think Aubrey makes some really good, mild stuff.

Oh, and I used the Burts Bees bar soap on my first baby for his first bath. Ignorant first-time mom me didn't even CONSIDER that it might not be tear-free (and like an idiot I didn't read the label). So I washed his hair and rinsed away... until he started screaming. He cried and cried. I cried and cried. His little eyes were so red. I felt completely awful and inept. So, be careful w/ Burts' bar soap.

I too have a DH who is emphatic about suds, shampoo, etc. Jason makes an Earth's Best line that we use for shampoo and body wash. My son has very sensitive skin and it is one of the few that does not have any parabens in it which we try to strictly avoid.

Has anyone tried using Dr. Bronner's for bubble bath? I have never used bubble bath for the kids but know they would think it was fun. Just curious. The Earth's Best line doesn't have a bubble bath and the wash doesn't make enough bubbles.

Castille soap should not be used on the genitals...It's too drying and strips skin of much needed oils. I found out the hard way by using Terressentials unscented body wash in ds's bath. An hour or two later and his poor privates were peeling/flaking/red and he said that it hurt.

Then, I did some research on the EWG site.
Right now, I'm going to try 365 Unscented glycerin soap. Simply cuz it was .99 and was all I could afford. Plus, it just has saponified coconut oil and glycerin in it. That's it.

How about this stuff:

http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...PLST-0-SRCH-HV

Earth's Best Organic Lavender 2-in-1 Shampoo & Body Wash created by Jason gently cleanses baby's skin and hair with mild tear-free surfactants. This hypo-allergenic formula, lightly scented with lavender oil to calm baby during bathtime, nourishes skin and hair with Beta Glucan, Oat Oil, and Panthenol. Will not irritate eczema or cradle cap.

* Tear Free Formula
* No Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates
* No Parabens
* No Synthetic Fragrances
* 100% Vegetarian
If a shampoo is 'tear free', it is because it has a numbing agent in it. Meaning it actually numbs the eyes so that they don't feel it stinging.
I havent seen any out there, I am sorry! I do have a question for you, how are you in a food club and where can I find one? We eat all organic but I have to buy groceries at 3 different places in order to stay in budget. Any tips on finding a food club here?
Tom's of Maine makes a nice one. I am pretty sure it's tear free, or at least super gentle. I think the one we have is Honeysuckle.....
