Teenage girls and menstrual products

I'm thinking ahead here- my oldest is 10 and starting to "bud" but hasn't started menstruating yet.

I use a diva cup. We don't have any disposable pads or tampons in the house.

I can't imagine toting cloth pads around in middle school. I suppose a menstrual cup might be an option if she doesn't empty it while at school, but are those cups easy for adolescents to use? I figured out the Keeper on my own when I was in college, but I'd already been fitted for a diaphram by then. Would a 10 or 11yo need something smaller?? I used tampons as a teenager, from my very first period, and had no trouble inserting those.

So what do other NFL families with preteen/teen girls do? Should I buy a box of sposie tampons and/or pads from the HFS?

I actually bought my daughter a set of Freshies for her 11th birthday. She is going to be 12 in 2 months and still has not had to use them. I let her pick out all the colors and she thought it was cool.

Of course lately she is tired of this "organic" kick as it is ruining her life. She said that once she moves out she is going to eat a McDonalds every day so I might as well just let her have "insert whatever here." :LOL

I personally didn't start using tampons until I was 14. I stoped using them when I got my period back when dd was 10 months old because they hurt. I dont know, maybe it was the oranic ones or something but after that I went to cloth. I have been meaning to buy the diva cup to try it out but i just haven't gotten around to it yet.

IMO I would wait until my daughter was older to get her the diva cup. If you must use disposable pads get the organic ones. Maybe she can use the disposable at school, and cloth at home. Just a thought.

I would tell her about all the options, and the advantages and disadvantages of all, and let her decide.
If your daughter carries a purse, I don't see why cloth pads would be that inconvenient. Having said that, I've had 18 yrs of aunt flo's visits and am not a novice as your daughter will be.

I think you should talk to her about paper pads and cloth pads and give her the pros and cons to both sides of the issue. I do think she will be too young for inserting a diva cup but that is just my opinion.
One of my dance students (17 now) has been using cloth pads for about a year. She carries them in a two compartment makeup bag. She loves them and has never had a problem transporting them.
I agree with the other poster about her being too young for the Diva cup. I mean the diva cup takes some getting used to and at that age she is probably not that "in tune" with things down there yet. I do think that you should give her all the options, including the diva cup, and let her decide.

If you let her decide and she decides on disposibles. Please, get organic. Chemicals easily travel through mucous membranes. Protect her from pesticide and fragrances, etc.
My DD hasn't started yet, but we've discussed this and even purchased (and are trying to make) some cloth ones for here at home. She'd rather use disposables at school though.

I just got my first Diva Cup and I'm a little scared of the size of it

:LOL

I have 11-year-old twin girls, one of whom has started her cycles. She started out using disposables but has now switched to Luna Pads. She said the disposables were "too itchy." I agree! She hasn't had to tote the pads around yet since we homeschool, but I know the time is coming when a sleepover will occur during her period or she'll go to a party or something. Her problem is that she is in total denial that her body is changing, so she doesn't change the pad often enough. When she was using the disposables, she would actually sometimes just not put one on because she didn't like how it felt. It's like she thought if she didn't acknowledge it, the blood would stop flowing. Of course it didn't, it flowed all over her clothes and the furniture.
It's going to be a hard sell to get her to carry pads in her purse, especially since all the room in her purse is taken up by her Gameboy and games. :LOL

I used tampons from the very beginning and would have loved to have used a Diva back then. I was *very* self-conscious about keeping tampons in my backpack and was afraid someone would see them. Show her the options and let her decide for herself.
