hello
dd has had a bum rash for about a month now--its about the size of a quarter, and is just plain red and bumpy. it hasnt spread outside this one localized area on one butt cheek. i took her to the dr after she'd had it for a week, and he said it was just contact dermititis. she's in cloth diapers and i change her very often, as well as leave her diaperless. it somtimes looks better sometimes worse. i've tried 4 different creams. my mom said it'll go away when she's done teething (she's working on 4 teeth currently, poor dear). anyone heard of this teething/diaper rash connection?
thanks!
It is not uncommon for there to be a diaper rash during teething. There is an increase in saliva (you probably noticed ) and it can cause a higher acidity level.

Which kinds of diaper creme are you using? My personal favorite is Weleda Diaper Rash absolutely awesome stuff. You might consider putting a little bit of lanolin on that stop (if you have some Lansinoh). Another popular home remedy is to use Mylanta or any brand of Milk of Magnesium. Just slather a bit on the spot and it helps to dry the irritation right up. Wonderful if you are dealing with really acidic poops too.

We always knew when DD was going to get a tooth because it was the only time she would get an awful diaper rash. If you are BFing you can put some breastmilk on it and that will help to clear it up. Someone also told me you can put veg shortening on dipe rashes and that will help as well although I've never tried it. Another thing that helps is taking off the dipe for as long as possible during the day, sunning the rash since it is really nice out, and changing the dipe as often as possible so your babe doesn't have to sit in the acidic urine.

Hope this helps.

Our babe got a small rash like you describe, but it was when solids were introduced. I think she already had her first two teeth. It was certainly where poop was touching her skin, and this poop was quite different from the ebf stuff she had before.

We called the ped, and she said to use a touch of hydrocortisone cream, although the tube says not to use for diaper rash. We used aveeno's diaper cream as well. We cloth diaper, so we used liners during this time to keep the stuff off the diaper, and also to make removing peanut buttery poop easier. We also did lots of diaper-free time.

It went away with time, and she's cut two more teeth since, so i don't think ours was teething related. Thank goodness. Oh, the one big thing- we quit using diaper wipes. We had alcohol and fragrance-free ones, so i thought they'd be ok, but i think it made things a lot worse.

wishing you pain-free bums,
