Tell me brands of inexpensive yet supersoft wool.

My oldest needs a new hat for the winter. She has some mild sensory issues so wool is not always the best material to use. I would really like to make her a wool hat rather than an acrylic or cotton one. Any suggestions?

I would just love, love, love to make her another hat using the super merino from ArtYarns. But it's $$. I've also used a super wash from Karabella but that too is $8 or $9 for 50g.

I would love to make a hat, scarf and mittens this time. Any suggestions?

Malabrigio and Handpaintedyarn.com are both good.

But not sure if its considered inexpensive or not....
100purewool is soft as a cloud, as are any of the alpaca yarns that I have used (or petted in the yarn store
)

Bernat makes a 50% wool/50% alpaca yarn called Ultra Alpaca which is extremely soft too.

ETA: the purewool is pretty cheap if you can get in on a coop, and the Ultra Alpaca is about $7 for 100g/218 or so yards at my local yarn store.

Have you tried Brown Sheep lamb's pride?
The colors are amazing and you can get the 15% Mohair and 85% wool. I find it is soft

Not nearly as soft as baby alpaca but it is still nice and is not super expensive!

KnitPicks Swish is really soft. And Panache is absolutely decadent if you wanted to go that way, and you could probably get a kids hat out of one ball.

I
Manos.

I have two skeins of supermerino ArtYarns that I don't think I'll be using. It's been sitting in my stash forever now and I just haven't done anything with it. It's pinks...you want it? PM if you like! I understand the love you have for this stuff.

See if she is sensitive I'd stay away from Alpaca though. As soft as it is, its VERY hairy for every kind I've ever seen and can lead to strays getting in her eyes or mouth if for a hat. But then again, thats just my experience.
Patons classic merino is soft and very inexpensive. You can get it at any of the big craft stores and it comes in a decent range of colors.
I'd go with the Malabrigo 6 ply merino. The 100purewool could even be a bit scratchy. Avoid anything with mohair content as well.

Wow, different people have different opinions! I can barely even touch Lambs Pride, it is soooooo scratchy. I personally steer very far away from it.

I second Patons Merino, or even (gasp) Lion Brand wool - not the superwash wool, wool-ease stuff, but the 100% wool that they recommend for felting.

I think so too re the Lambs Pride - it's scratchy, prickly, annoying! So is Peace Fleece. Anything with mohair to be honest.

I don't find Patons Merino to be that soft either, or their wool. I DO find Knitpicks Swish Superwash to be soft, and their Merino style.

If you can splurge just a little, though - www.threeirishgirls.com has the most beautiful gorgeous softest yarn I have ever touched in my life- Galenas Merino. I still can't get over how soft this stuff is.

My ds who fusses about most wools wears Paton's with out complaining. Malabrigo is super soft, too and not too expensive. It's only $10.50 a skein at my LYS.

it's not all wool.. it's a wool/cotton/nylon combo, but it's DIVINE. it as soft as you can get, I promise. It's like a cloud. It's what we use for nb baby hat gifts. They don't currently have it online at joann.com but our joann store carries it .. if you can find it on sale or use a coupon, it's not bad at all.

just make sure you get the dolcetto... they have a few kinds that look a lot alike..

I can't imagine that there is a softer yarn out there with wool in it.

you could try ebay too to see if you can find it there.
If you cannot find it anywhere, i might have some to spare. i believe i can get two nb hats out of a ball and have a tiny bit left over so i'd say you could probably get two toddler hats out of a ball... or one child hat.. assuming you are knitting and not crocheting.
My favorite yarn is Cashsoft. It comes in a dk or aran weight, and is the most amazing stuff. It is a blend of merino, cashmere (and maybe something else). It is so incredibly soft, but has the temp properties of wool. Their color pallate is very sophisticated. Best of all, it's machine washable! It's about half the price of ArtYarns Supermerino.
