Prefolds are not for everyone. Personally, I loved them in the newborn stage, but trying to get the on a wiggly crawler/walker is my idea of torture. I much prefer fitteds. Some people like pockets, some like AIOs ... that's why there are so many different choices, for all of the different peoples.
Having said that, I wouldn't give up on them after only one day -- give it some time and see what you think over the long haul.
I would definitely get a snappi and/or some pins, if I were you. (Heck, I'll send you a snappi, if you want -- PM me your address.) They might change your mind about prefolds. Tri-folding sucks, IMO. There's nothing to keep the diaper in place, it slides everywhere, and there's no barrier around the legs to keep poo from getting all over the cover. BLECH!
And it probably only feels like you were changing all the time because you weren't feelin' the love.
That's pretty average for number of changes in that time span, I'd say, even in sposies. (Or it should be, even in sposies -- those chemicals may hold the pee, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing.) Also, if you are worried about leaks, you might want to get some doublers so that the diaper can hold more between changes. We have a ton of doublers, use them all the time, and my DD is not even what I would call a heavy wetter. (My DS was a heavy wetter ... whoa nelly, a heavy wetter! :LOL) You could by some preemie prefolds (which you can get 12 for $10 including shipping ... ask Spark where) to use as doublers and just fold 'em into your other prefolds or lay them in your fitteds.
Hang in there, mama. Keep trying things and you'll eventually find something you're happy with!
