I am almost 32 weeks pregnant. I have had a cold for about a week, but now most of my symptoms are gone except for my cough, but it has gotten much worse. I'm coughing all the time. Sometimes it's hard to even catch my breath. It has caused me to throw up a few times. I've broken down and taken Robitussin, but that hasn't helped much at all. Any advice? I don't even know how I'm going to sleep tonight with this cough.

When I was pg with #3 I had a HORRIBLE cough and DH got it too. Of course he could take whatever he wanted and took Nyquil. I took Sambucol's Elderberry Extract in syrup form. My cough was gone in 48 hours and DH was still coughing after DAYS. It wasn't until he finally gave up on the Nyquil and started taking my stuff that he got better - Men:

I hope you feel better soon. It's no fun being sick when you're pg especially if it is keeping you from sleep. Feel better Mama

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping last night was the worst of it. I think I overexerted myself. I think it's sinus drainage down my throat that's causing most of it. I've coughed a lot today, but it hasn't been nearly as bad.

It could be whooping cough. I caught it when I was in late pregnancy. Its very important to make sure that it is not whopping cough because you do not want to pass it on to your newborn. Also, you can pass it on to other moms/babies. What made me think that it might be whooping cough is your inability to catch your breath and the vomiting.

Please let me know if you want more information. It is a nasty cough and in between you feel fine. It lasts several weeks-months. You can get it as an adult even if you were vaxed as as child.

We ended up OK (non-infectious) by the time my DD was born. But we did pass it on to at least one other mom who came to my baby shower. Not fun. Plus it weakened me for the birth.

Thanks Catskill. I had considered whooping cough. It does seem to fit. I'm hoping that's not it, but I'm going to get it checked out to be sure. I called my ob this morning and the receptionist told me just to go to the walk in clinic. So I'll probably do that this afternoon and then call her back to make sure whatever they give me is ok, if they give me anything.

Whooping cough can be difficult to diagnose. I saw FIVE doctors before they diagnosed it. I finally insisted on a PCR test (must be done through the nose or throat) to verify it. The problem is you are fine when you are not coughing. If you can elicit the cough in their presence, then they'll believe you. It is an ungodly cough -- literally suffocating. I even almost blacked out / was incontinent at times.

The only cough med that helped me was something with codeine. I took tyelenol 3 I think. I was loathe to take it since I was pregnant, but the coughing was keeping me up all night and my health was declining. I only needed a couple of pills max a night. My OB reassured me that it was entirely safe. I hadn't taken a thing all pregnancy, but this was so severe I had to.

Just be careful to not go into waiting rooms with other preg moms, or little babies. It is so contagious. We were given masks to wear when we had to go out and basically kept ourselves quaranteened til the antibiotic was finished.

The treatment of choice is erythro, though they have a more modern equivalent which we took (I needed two courses -- it's harder to lick in a preg woman). The modern one (forget the name, could find out if you need me to) is easier on the stomach. Erythro can sometimes cause a side-effect in the babe (a digestive one that later requires surgery).

THanks again. I went to the clinic and saw the nurse practitioner. She thinks I have an upper respiratory infection and said that my throat looked really bad. She thinks that my sinus drainage is causing the coughing and I think she's right because it gets so much worse at night. She gave me an antibiotic- Z-pak which is Azithromycin. I am allergic to Erythromycin or she was going to give me that. Would the Zpak be effective if it did turn out to be pertussis do you think? She also gave me Zyrtec and Robitussin, but I'm probably not going to take those. I've tried them in the past and they did nothing for me.

I had an awful cough--got it 2 weeks ago--but it was something viral that started with fever, went on the Zpack, got a little better, but still had significant coughing.
I saw an acupuncturist and a homeopath, and was much better the next day.
I did pull some rib muscles pretty significantly coughing, but it didn't interfere with my labor.

If you have a neti pot, that helps me TONS with my sinus issues. --also is your house dry? Having our humidifier running has helped a lot.

I also like the Boiron homeopathic cough syrup and slippery elm lozenges.

hope you feel better soon!

My Dr gave me a copy of this when I got a horrible chest cold and NOTHING even slowed the cough and I took some pretty heavy duty stuff. I now swear by this recipe and its the first thing I try now

http://www.prevention.com/article/0,...2264-1,00.html

Yes, the zithro is what I got for whooping cough. I had to take two courses of it. If it is pertussis, it will make it less communicable and help with any secondary infection. However, it will not stop the cough, if it is pertussis. The damage is already done to your throat by the bacteria. I think the cilia are gone and they take some time to repair.

Personally, I also would skip the other meds if it's pertussis. If it is w.cough, they won't help. I tried them all, didn't help at all, and if you're pregnant, do you really want to take them? Same with neti pots (great for other coughs/colds) and vaporizers (awesome with other illnesses). Nothing helps, I found, except codeine when you've got whooping/cough, in my experience.

I hope you get better soon, mama.

Thanks again. Your posts have been so helpful. I've had three doses already and am not really improving much. I mean, I feel a bit better and can breathe better, but my cough is the same. It's really looking like it might really be pertussis. I think if my cough is no better by the time I've finished the zithromax then I'm going to call the doc back and ask to be tested for it. Or is it too late now that I've taken the zithro? Well, at any rate I'm going to check back with her. I'm not taking the other meds. I took a bit of the Robitussin and it didn't help at all, just as I suspected. I'm not looking forward to going to bed tonight though, because that's when my cough really kicks in. I puked all over my pillow last night. Yuck! It just comes on so suddenly it happens before I know it. Does pertussis usually involve a lot of mucousy congestion? Because I'm getting a lot of that in the mornings and night and that seems to be what makes me cough so badly at those times. I just wish this whole thing would be over! It sucks!

I don't know about the mucousy congestion. That might be your body's secondary reaction to the initial infection.

I don't remember the timing on when the PCR is valid. They told me we were beyond the time for testing, but I insisted on it, and mine came back positive. My DH's did not because his infection came about 3-4 weeks before mine. You can find out about PCR testing on the web.

My theory, and I couldn't find this online, is that preg women have a much harder time with pertussis. It takes much longer to clear it and like me, you might need two courses of meds. I believe we are also infectious longer.

Unfortunately, to get a proper diagnosis, you will have to fight for it. People are so sadly misinformed. Even infectious disease specialists! Its actually very common in the population.

In terms of nightime coughing, I would urge you to consider a real cough suppressant. Your health is really going to suffer if you can't get rest.

I'm going to look online for a site I found a couple of years ago that has the sound of a true whooping cough. But look, with the vomiting, true vomiting (not just gagging) you've got the classic picture. I remember I was relieved when I would vomit because it meant I could breathe again -- my throat would reopen. I swear, I would vomit everywhere -- restaurants, parking lots, in the kitchen sink. And if someone made me laugh too much -- I would begin to cough, then whoop, then vomit. God, what a bizarre thing!
