terrified first timer

Hey. My name's Margaret and ... well ... I'm pregnant. I just found out a week ago, I'm five weeks along, and I'm totally terrified!

I don't really know what to say. This is my first pregnancy. I'm 27 years old, in three months I'm marrying the love of my life, this pregnancy was planned, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm feeling totally overwhelmed right now.

I just have this overwhelming desire for someone to lead me through this, holding my hand the entire way. I've been asking random strangers for advice, which is actually how I ended up here. A lovely woman in the grocery store was kind enough to tell me whether or not it's safe for me to eat shrimp and then tell me a thousand other things as well. (Thanks)

But she said that the forums here are the only way she ever made it through her pregnancy, so I'm hoping they'll do the same for me. Having support is important, so we should all be in this together.

Hi and Welcome! This is a very helpful place. I would recommend the book Your Pregnancy Week By Week. It is full of helpful info. I was very nervous with my dd who is now 10 1/2 months old already. I thought that it would be easier the second time around but there are still new/different things with this pregnancy. I am 20 weeks and 4 days and we just found out that it is a boy. This pregnancy wasn't planned
but I guess that's OK. Good Luck!

Hi and welcome! I spent countless hours on this forum when I was pregnant! It's such a totally amazing resource and I'm so glad I found it.

If you're interested in working through your fears regarding pregnancy and birth, I recommend the book Birthing From Within. As far as information about pregnancy goes, I LOVED The Natural Pregnancy Book by Aviva Jill Romm.

Best of Luck!

I can remember very well how terified I was at that time.
My biggest fear was birth, so I started researching that and, at first, I got even more terified, but after reading a lot I managed to take good decisions and had a nice natural birth. At the time I wasn't into discussion forums - looking back I think it would have saved me a lot of time to come to this forum. The discussions are very informative and they are real shortcuts to internet searches.

If I may suggest something: don't trust too much one particular person or website. Just gather tons of information from all sides and let it sink - your mind will do the rest (and baby will help with her/his opinion!)

Have a great pregnancy!

I was scared when I got pregnant with #1. Even though we had been trying for about six months. Once I found out it was the whole "well there's NO going back now" feeling. Natural living and certain aspects of Attatchment parenting came naturally but other things I have learned if that makes sense. Welcome and Best of luck on your new bundle.

Yeah, it can be scary... but it is also a beautiful, wonderful time. Pregnancy is such a short time in our lives- try an enjoy as much as you can!

And there are so many people here that know so many wonderful things.

And as for book recommendations, William Sears (he's the author- you can find his book at the bookstore or in the library) is popular around here!

One thing that is different (and very positive!) about this board, compared to many, is that the people here support you in ways that encourage you to trust your body, your mothering instincts, and your child. Enjoy every second of mommyhood; it's like nothing else!!

Oh, I think everyone here can relate to the feelings of being overwhelmed and terrified. Transitions are always scary--even good ones--and this is an irreversible change! It's easy to say "don't worry" but let's be honest: what first timer *doesn't* worry? I remember reading everything I could get my hands on, and asking EVERYONE for advice (yes, including random strangers in stores!) and scaring myself about a million different things. "What if" is a powerful question when you're unsure. Take the very good advice another poster gave you...gather information from a number of sources, and apply what works for you. The big secret is...there is no One Answer. To any of it. You just kind of feel around and figure out what is going to work for you. This website is a terrific place to start. I second the recommendation of Dr. Sears' books. And I know it's a while away, but I'll leave you with the best piece of parenting advice EVER. This came from my mother...who was told it by her OB way-back-when...

"Anytime you worry because you've never been a mother before, remember this: This baby has never HAD a mother before, either. You learn together!"

HUGS! And congratulations!

to you, and congratulations on your pregnancy!
I hope you have a wonderful wedding, too.

There's a lot to be said for trusting your body, and trusting Mother Nature. If you like to meditate or pray, you could try looking within yourself for some inner wisdom and peace. You could talk to your body, and talk to your baby - ask them what they think they need.

If you like to read, a book I love is Our Babies, Ourselves by anthropologist Meredith Small. It's not a parenting book per se, but it does look at parenting and babies in cultures around the world. It is a wonderful glimpse into what babies are adapted by evolution to expect and want, and how parents around the world fulfill those needs.

Best wishes for a peaceful and uneventful pregnancy!

Hello Margaret

Congratulations on your pregnancy. You'll do just fine, trust me. You will surprise yourself. I can remember being pregnant for the first time and the overwhelming feeling.

Gosh how I wish I would have found this forum at that time. Why couldn't I have met that stranger....

Anyway, here is one forum you gotta visit: It's theVaccine Forum, because one of the first things they'll ask is whether you want to vaccinate your newborn with the Hepatitis B vaccine and that is crazy.

That is a disease of prostitutes and needle users. Why would a baby ever need that type of vaccine.

At the very least you have to know that vaccines are not a law and you can refuse any or all of them.

Good luck on your journey to full term.

Hope to see you often.
