HOUSTON - Advocates for the separation of church and state are protesting Texas Gov. Rick Perry's plans to hold a bill-signing ceremony at a conservative evangelical church. One bill restricts abortion; a second calls for a ban on same-sex marriage.

OMG I live in Tx and just watched coverage of this on tv. Actually there were protesters for a variety of causes there. One group was protesting the state of public schools, another the separation of church and state, another women's rights, and of course gay rights. Gov Perry's response to the gay rights protesters was "There are other states that may be more lenient about homosexual marriage, maybe they should just move there."

What is this state coming to?

Guess they forgot to read that First Amendment to the Constitution.

I was planning on going to the protest but the weather was too hot. It wasn't technically at an evangelical church though. It was at a christian-based private school. He said it was a seperation of church and state because the bills were signed in the gymnasium and not the sanctuary
: . Also, the bill banning gay marriage in Texas is sort of just a publicity stunt because we're supposed to vote on it in November anyway. Whatever he signed didn't actually ban anything. The abortion bill was to make it so that any woman under the age of 18 has to have both parents consent to get the abortion. There were reportedly over 200 protesters though, which is huge in the extremely conservative area he visited.

We like to call him Governor Good-Hair. The guy is a joke. He has failed Texas miserably in too many ways to list. Since he has become gov, at least 4 million children have lost their health insurance, teacher's pensions have been cut while his has been increased, voting district lines have been redrawn to put more Republicans in the capitol, and I could go on and on.

"Protesters turned out Sunday afternoon for Governor Rick Perry's appearance in Fort Worth to sign a bill requiring parental consent for abortions.

About 200 people attended the demonstration outside the Calvary Christian Academy on Oakhurst Scenic Drive north of downtown, where Perry was signing the bill.

Those who came to protest said they were angry with the choice of a religious site for the event.

Demonstrators said they were also angry with the Legislature's inaction on the topics of school finance reform and health care, while others were upset with Perry's stance against gay marriage.

Meanwhile, an overflow crowd of 800 cheered the governor in support of the signing of the bill, which will require anyone under 18 seeking an abortion to get permission from a parent."

Do we really need Florida, or Mississippi or Louisiana for that matter? Let 'em all go.
I know there is something in the TX papers that say that TX can split into 5 parts. Don't know why they would want to. Can't we just split it in two and give all these super-"Christian" Repubs a small slice of E. TX- like from Beaumont over to LA. I think is TX splits off Mexico should probably have dibs- then we could get rid of all the "minute-men" and send them up the the OK and NM border.

Yeah well I'm willing to concede on Florida with what ever is in the water down there and all, I'm not sure we need Missisippi either but Louisiana's got some darn fine food.........

Actually I think Texas is still a republic and has some weird thing about the state flag and the national flag being able to be flown at the same height or something.............(I was really bored when I lived in Texas. I spent all my time doing ceramics or learning useless bits of information)
Please leave us poor Texans alone. Especially those of us fighting the good fight down here in Beaumont! It is a tough row to hoe, people, but we are trying. We've had some fabulous progressive/Democratic/liberal political figures, too, yk.

FTR, Beaumont votes blue. Yep. Hard to believe, I know, but check the map from Nov. Tiny little Jefferson County. Thank the (oil refinery) unions and trial lawyers - and the few yellow dog Democrats left. I'm proud that DeLay's challenger is from my district, Nick Lampson. He was a good congressman booted out by Republican gerrymandering that changed his hometown Beaumont district to include part of suburban Houston. Sweet irony.

Also - a bit of Texas history - when Texas became a state the agreement included provisions that Texas could at any time break into as many as 5 states. Scary if you realize that means 10 senators from Texas. Our recent history with Senators is not too impressive.

Ann Richards was great. Isn't Kinky Friedman planning on running for governor? I've seen a few bumper stickers lately that say "Kinky for Governor. Why the hell not?"

Yeah, I heard that on Pacifica. I know we have some great lefties here, I'm also on a blue island in this sea of red. Well, not really but I live really close to the blue island. It's the only way I can stand it here. Well that and it doesn't snow. I can learn to love just about any place that doesn't have 9 months of sucky, freezing, sunless weather every year.

Louisiana may have great food, but it's the most racist freakin' state in the union.
Mama G is in Miami and I'm not willing to let the South have her! Maybe they could have the rest of Florida and the north could keep Miami. Hell, half the people there are from the north!
Maybe we could extract mamma g and the art deco along with some of the best resturants in New Orleans and then let the rest go...............

I don't know why I'm worried about other 'red' states; my own has enough stupidity to fight that we might as well be sent away too.........I don't think we have any redeeming politicians
