Frequently here and eleswhere, conservatives have made the remark that we have the best country in the world - usually meaning or implying that we have the best government in the world. Personally, I find this claim a bit ridiculous as I seriously doubt those who say it really know what all of the governments in the world are like/about and it strikes me as provincial. A bit like a seven year old who exclaims to his class that his dad is the best dad in the whole world. Well, his dad may be a nice dad, or a fairly crappy dad, but what the kid is really saying is he loves his dad. I would venture that most of us here - wherever we fall on the political spectrum, love our country, though many of us are not happy with our government and would like to see it do better. So, what does the "best government in the world" look like to you? If you were able to have your perfect country, what would that be, how would it operate? What's your vision? We can't create it if we can't envision it.... let your imagination fly!

Oh I agree, I started a thread a year or so ago about how eveyrone says the US is the land of freedoms as if no other country has any freedom.

My dream country Midwifery the standard care, liberal paid maternity leave, universal health care, liberal services to help those out of work, homeless, single parents ect, Bfing, intactness and other AP philosophies are mainstream, religion completely out of government, legal abortions, the right of any consenting adults to marry regardless of sex, a policy of non discrimination based on race, color, sexual orientation, religion ect ect, corporal punishment outlawed! Peace not War, and a policy of protecting the enviroment and not big business.

free birth control, tampons and toilet paper to begin with. kibbutz style living: communities of people with common goals working and living together. people would be free to choose how they live their lives. no one would go without shelter, food, healthcare, or the amount of education that they desire. no theocratic governments. stuff like that

The best country in the world? Why, don't you mean Australia? :LOL

I once wrote out a list of the things that I would do if I were Queen of the Universe. Unfortunately the list is now in a locked thread. ANd I'm too short on time to re-create it....

Thanks for the replies - I guess I was also thinking in terms of things like how the government is structured - i.e. two-party system, parliment, coalition, etc. what does democracy mean and do we have one? Do we the people really have representation and if not, then how do we obtain that? I was wondering about some of the European countries where there are more than two parties and even minority points of view can be heard....
