The ire of the Irish

Remember the old saying for Ireland was that it was the Land of 1000 Welcomes. Well, I hope Dubya's advance people have given him the 411 that they're not really keen on laying out the big welcome mat for him when he pops in for a visit during the US-EU summit at the end of the week:

"Polls show the Irish people are overwhelmingly opposed to the American military using Shannon Airport as a stopover for troops going to and from Iraq. And Ireland's prime minister Bertie Ahern and his ruling Fianna Fail party have been bitterly criticized for allegedly selling out Ireland's neutrality for the Yankee dollar.

"Last week, in elections for local councils and the European Parliament, Fianna Fail posted its worst showing since the party was founded in the 1920s, apparently paying a price for its failure to echo the increasing criticism of the Bush administration that most Irish parties, and most European governments, have voiced in the past year. There was no exit polling, so it is unclear how much the Irish government's refusal to take the German-French line on the Iraq war hurt it. (The parties of France's president Jacques Chirac and Germany's chancellor Gerhard Schroeder also fared badly in the European elections.) But in refusing to openly criticize the Bush administration, Ahern is at odds with most Irish people."

As a person who has visited Ireland twice in the past couple of months, I can attest to this, and it runs the gamut of folk, from my cousins in high-end jobs in Dublin to my farming uncle in the rural west of the country.

Shameless bump.

Check it out.

Now, exactly *who* does the US have left as allies?

Ack! I've never been to Ireland, but as a passionate Irish-American, I feel strongly that George W. Bush should keep his mitts off of Ireland.
